Round 1: Monster Energy Sponsors Cup at Dade City MX

Clarke Clears the First Hurdle

DADE CITY, FL

The 31st annual Dade City Motocross points championship started off with a roar, as 349 riders did battle on a newly designed track. The weekend started off on Friday with a pit party and a MX-vs.-ATV Reflex competition, sponsored by Imoto MX. Saturday morning, a special practice was given to the riders so they could get used to the new track.2010 0206 Dade City MX Michael Clarke 1

Twenty-two riders were competing for the number-one gate pick in the Sponsors Cup timed practice. Butler Brothers' Kyle Keylon came out swinging and captured the best time with a 53.070-second lap. Defending champion Michael Clarke (1, above) finished only .171 of a second behind. Mike Picone was third, just .792 of a second down.

In the first moto, Kissimmee Motorsports' Kory Keylon got the holeshot, over Clarke, Picone, Pit Stop Graphix's Tyler Livesay, and Bucket Of Parts' Forrest Smith. Picone made a mistake and Livesay went by on lap three for third. A freight train comprised of Ian Millet, Dionne Racing's Jesse Freeman, Smith, and Ray Leybovich tried to keep pace. With one lap to go, Clarke got caught up with some lappers and fell. At the checkers, Kory took a comfortable win over Livesay, Clarke, Picone and Leybovich.

The second-moto holeshot went to the Öhlins Suspension/Action Honda/Stellar Graphics/Repsol-sponsored Clarke. On the first lap, Livesay and Kory Keylon went tumbling down the track after the second tabletop. Livesay was out, and Kory remounted at the back of the pack. Camp, Picone, Kyle Keylon, Smith, Leybovich, Millett, DNA's Derek Hall, and Ricky Renner were now following the leaders. Clarke pulled away, and Camp tried to match his pace. Halfway through the moto, Camp, Picone and Kyle were involved in a scrap for second. Kyle passed Picone for third. On the last lap, Kyle passed Camp for second. At the finish, it was Clarke, Kyle, Camp, Picone and Millett.

"I got out front and just rode my own race," Clarke said on the podium. "I almost went down a couple of times but recovered and went on for the victory."

Erik Stage won the first moto, over Ayden Shive and Garrett Smith, in the 50cc Beginner (4-6) Stock class. In the second moto, Shive turned the tables and won, over Stage and Smith.

Palm Coast's Matthew Lade led the start of the 65 B (9-11) contest, but the order shuffled several times. Lade won the first moto, over Cameron Sepulveda. Weston Levingston came up through the pack for third, over Dalton Bowen and O'Neal's Morgan Johnson.

In the second moto, Lade and Sepulveda took first and second, respectively. Levingston rounded out the podium, over Coy Symonds. Bowen dropped to fifth.

The 2009 Girl's class champion, Christina Older, took off and motored away to both moto wins. Flex Pack's Shelby Quast was runner-up both times. Courtney Long got third in the first moto, but bike problems knocked her out of the second moto. Trick Threadz' Taylor Goldsborough rounded out the overall podium with a 4-3 score.2010 0206 Dade City MX Jesse Freeman 24

Jesse Freeman (24, above) took double-moto wins in the Four-Stroke class.

Bodie Colangelo won the Supermini class with a 2-1 score over Kevin Steele's 1-2 tally. Christina Older went 4-3 for third overall.
