Alma Motocross Park Season Opener
Alma Motocross Park

Holdeman, Edwards - Aces at Alma

ALMA, GA

For its season opener, Alma Motocross Park caught a break from the rainy weather. The track was hit by heavy rain on Saturday, but facility owner James Westbrook had prepared the track well. Sunday's track and weather conditions were good.2010 0131 Alma MX Cody Holdeman 32 vs Joshua Gibbs 30

Some of the day's closest racing took place in the 65cc ranks, between Cody Holdeman (32, above left) and Joshua Gibbs (30, above right). The combined 65cc (7-9) and 65cc (10-11) motos had Holdeman and Gibbs entered in separate classes, but that didn't keep them separated on the track! Holdeman and Gibbs were often side by side and, during the opening moto, they tangled and crashed together. They restarted simultaneously and resumed their dicing, which ended with Holdeman ahead by a bikelength at the checkered flag, taking the 65 (10-11) division moto win.

In the 65cc Open division, Holdeman and Gibbs again raced closely. And again, Holdeman held on for both moto wins, over Gibbs.2010 0131 Alma MX Kyle Edwards

Kyle Edwards (above) dominated both the Schoolboy and Motocross Lites C divisions, garnering perfect scores in each. Weston Rountree and Myles Heath were the runners-up, respectively, in these two classes.

Beasley Motosports-backed Edwards was also entered in the Motocross C contest, but a spill in the opening moto held him to an eventual third spot overall. Timmy Revels put together the winning 1-2 score, over Josh Morgan.

There were many position changes during the Open Money motos. David Hagins and Zach Crosby emerged from the chaos with a moto win apiece, but it was Massachusetts' Cody Williams who claimed the overall win via his 2-2 score, over Hagins (4-1) and Crosby (1-4).

The Supermini division provided some excitement, as Spaceport Cycles/Pirelli-backed Tommy Maxey came from behind in both motos to earn a perfect score. Meanwhile, Austin Rue (3-2) edged Blake Keadle (2-3) for the silver. In another points tie, Cody Tindall (6-4) bested his brother Jody Tindall (5-5), rounding out the top five finishers.

The 85cc (7-11) division's first-moto winner, Jake Matthews, seemed destined for victory until bike problems in the final moto set him back to a third-overall score. Nick Sweat garnered the gold, over K.C. Covington.

The 50cc (4-6) and 50cc Open divisions featured a day-long brawl between Cobra tamer Caleb Rentz and KTM-mounted Alexander Case. Rentz prevailed, scoring a 2-1 tally in both classes, while Case posted 1-2 finishes each time.

In the Girls (7-15) contest, Morgan Johnson scored the opening-moto win after getting by Cadie Barlow. Johnson and Barlow squared off again in moto two, during which the duo clashed and crashed. Barlow restarted quickly, racing to the moto win and the overall. Johnson recovered to finish third, which was still good enough for the silver, over Jenna Eminger.

The MX Lites Beginner division had the honor of closing out the day's racing, and that final moto was a memorable one, as competitors played musical chairs with the lead position. During the last lap, Brian Richburg (51, below) regained the lead, thanks to spills by the two front-runners. Richburg netted a perfect score, over Mason Middlebrook (2-3) and Preston Bryan (5-2).2010 0131 Alma MX Brian Richburg 51
