The final Florida/Georgia Fall MX Classic round was raced at the beautiful Motocross of Marion County facility. The skies dumped large amounts of rain two days before the event, so practice was canceled on Saturday, in order to preserve the track. The track crew worked hard getting it ready. Practice on Sunday was a little muddy, but partway through the first motos the track was shaping up nicely. On this day, it was a real motocross track with bumps, ruts, fast straights, and all kinds of jumps. Let the racing begin!
One rider who rode like a champion was Beasley Motorsports/Cycle Gear/Christopher Bean Coffee-sponsored Kyle Edwards (317, above). After hitting a few bumps on the track halfway through the series, Edwards put it all together to win the series championship in the 250 C and 450 C classes. After winning the first moto of the 250 C class, Edwards put it in championship mode in the second moto to take second overall. The winner on the day was A.J. Sowerby, with a 2-1 score, and Allen Arnst took the last podium spot.
The three also met in the 450 C class, in which Sowerby went on to win both motos. Arnst followed him home in second in both motos, and Edwards went 4-3 for third overall.
One class that slipped away from Edwards was the 125-250 Schoolboy class. As with the other two classes, Edwards put on a late-series charge. Edwards needed to win both motos to have a chance at the championship. Jason Letellier (10, above) led going into the last round and just needed to finish behind Edwards and other series rival Myles Heath. Edwards won both motos, but Letellier went 4-2 on the day to take a three-point advantage over Edwards and a six-point advantage over Stellar Graphics' Heath to take the championship. Kirk Eminger played spoiler on the day, taking third overall with a 3-4 score, over Heath's 2-6 tally.
The Charbonneau family, from Washington State, was visiting Florida over the holidays. Older brother Tristan won the 85cc (7-11) contest with a 1-2 punch, over Triple J Cattle's Jonathan Baker's 4-1 score and series champion Chad Stonier's 3-3 tally. Tristan also won the 85cc (9-13) class, over Daniel Cook and Lifetime Enclosure's Zack Briar. Cody Charbonneau won the 65cc Open class, over three series rivals: Twin Air's Joshua Gibbs, Dunlop's Conner Lovett, and Monster Energy's Morgan Johnson.
The top graduate of the Beginner classes was Dawson Stark (199, above). This KTM-mounted youngster went on to win every race in the 85 Beginner class. Stark won both motos on this day, over Jeremy Truesdale and Chris McEntire each time.
The series banquet will be held at Bostwick MX Park on January 23, 2010, for all those who attended all six rounds of the Western Power Sports/Fly Racing-sponsored Florida/Georgia Fall MX Classic.
