Vet X Xtreme Prize Series
Round 6: Competitive Edge

Colvin Claims Victory!

HESPERIA, CA

Even though the Vet X racing year is nearing its end, the competition on the track is building up in several classes as the racers battle for the final series titles. Competitive Edge delivered an excellent track for the sixth round of the Xtreme Prize Series. The track was ripped and watered in the morning and it developed multiple lines through the corners, with nice inside ruts forming through the early motos on the inside as well as lines around the outside in every corner. The track left multiple options to set up passes, and many of the riders took full advantage of that fact throughout the day.

The 36-42 Amateur class lined up on the gate early in the day, with great track conditions, and when the gate dropped, the riders thundered up the start hill. As the riders sorted themselves out on the first lap, John Soriano was in the lead, with Dan Osborne chasing him. At the midway point, Soriano was able to maintain the lead, with Osborne homing in on his rear fender. With two laps to go, Osborne was able to get past Soriano and take the lead. Soriano then made a mistake, and Steve Gardner took full advantage of it and moved into second place. Meanwhile, throughout the moto, Mike Colvin (617, below) battled his way from eighth to third. At the finish line, it was Osborne taking the win, followed by Gardner and the hard-charging Colvin.Mike Colvin 617 at Competitive Edge 2009 1122

The second moto again saw Soriano in the early lead, while Colvin again had some work cut out for him, as he rounded the first lap in fourth position. Soriano maintained the lead through the early laps, just ahead of Osborne. With two laps to go, Colvin made a charge, making up two positions and challenging Soriano for the lead - and eventually stealing it. When the checkers were thrown, Colvin took the win, followed by Soriano and Gardner.

Colvin (3-1) captured the overall victory, followed by Gardner (2-3) and Osborne (1-4).Phil Cruz 950 at Competitive Edge 2009 1122

The Over 50 Novice victory was claimed by Proride.com's Phil Cruz (950, left). The first moto was won by Cruz, who put his Honda in front, ahead of Bill Booth. In the second moto, Cruz was able to get an early lead, but within a few laps Milton Mize had worked his way into the lead, ahead of Cruz. In the end, Cruz was unable to win that battle, but he did take the overall win with his 1-2 finishes, followed by Mize (3-1) and Booth (2-3).

In the 43-49 Novice class, Jovie Saulog and Gary Ivin split moto wins, with Ivin winning the first race, just ahead of Saulog, while Mike Kinney cruised his way into third. In the second moto, Saulog was able to steal the win away from Ivin on the last lap. The overall victory was owned by Saulog, his 2-1 scores nudging Ivin (1-2) into second place by virtue of the second-moto-score advantage. Third place overall belonged to Scott Fichter (5-3).
