SAN BERNARDINO, CA
Kawasaki-mounted Garrett West (403, above) finished off the final round of the Kal Gard Lubricants-backed California Racing Club Sponsorship Series with a dominating runaway victory in the 250 Beginner class at Glen Helen Raceway Park during the annual running of the Wild Turkey Gran Prix.
West made his intension clear by jumping out to an immediate as the 45-minute race got under way. Jasun Spriggs completed lap one of the hilly Glen Helen circuit in second place, ahead of Casey Johnson, Thomas Spalliero and Reilly Weaver. West put in one flawless lap after another and by the midway point had a comfortable 25-second lead over Spriggs in second place.
The second half of the race was all West's, as he checked out and won with an insurmountable lead. Johnson came up and challenged Spriggs for the runner-up position with time running out, but to no avail. Weaver greeted the checkers in fourth, over Spalliero.
Eric Hansen led the entire 45 minutes of 450 Beginner-class racing on his Honda. Nick Lopez finished a lonely second, ahead of Danny Muschwitz.
One of the best races of the day was the 85cc Open contest. Brenden Murray (62, above) and Nicholas Mercier were inseparable as they fought over the top spot. Mercier led the opening circuit, with Murray taking over on lap two. Mercier camped out on Murray's back fender for the entire 45 minutes and put in a great last-lap effort to get back around the Honda rider, only to come up mere feet short at the checkers. Cody Miller finished third.
Robert Ives Jr. had a good day at Glen Helen aboard his Moto Works/N-Style-backed KX450F, as he picked up wins in both the Vet Intermediate and Senior Amateur classes. Cameron Doll claimed runner-up honors in the Vet ranks, over Chris Kelly and Robbie Dunham. Steve Nakamoto would have to settle for a second-place finish, behind Ives, in Senior-class action. Blake Steelgrave rounded out the top three Seniors, ahead of Reggie Lamson and Bob Burns.
