Lamb Closes Out 2009 Season Like a Lion

ENGLISHTOWN, NJ

The final weekend of Raceway Park's 2009 season kicked off on Saturday with a special free practice day for all competitors signed up for Sunday's racing action. Saturday night was reserved for the track points champion awards dinner and jacket presentation. After a free barbecue-style dinner, the awards ceremony took place. Emceed by the voice of Raceway Park, track announcer Rich Trevelise, the top five racers in each class were presented with jackets and prizes from the series sponsors and were given their moment in the spotlight in front of their peers to thank their sponsors and discuss their year.

Sunday dawned unseasonably warm, and track conditions were excellent for the final race of the 2009 season. With daylight being at a premium, the Expert classes that were normally held were combined into one Vet Expert and one Open Expert class.Paul Lamb 408 at OBTRP 2009 1108

In the first combined Vet Expert moto, Kawasaki-mounted Paul Lamb (408, above) grabbed the holeshot and jumped out into the early lead. Hot on his heels were the Honda-mounted duo of Jim McIlvaine and Ivan Camacho (88, below) and the rest of field. When the pack emerged from the back section of the track, Lamb was still out front, with Camacho in second, but now Kawasaki rider Chris Chomko had worked his way into the number-three spot, and McIlvaine was in fourth place.Ivan Camacho 88 at OBTRP 2009 1108

Lamb and Camacho began to check out a little on the field, while Chomko rode his own race in third. Several laps in, it was still Lamb, Camacho, Chomko and McIlvaine riding first through fourth, and Rob Quinn had moved up into the top five. At moto's end, Lamb, Camacho and Chomko were the top three.

Under rapidly fading daylight, the second Vet Expert moto rocketed into the first turn. Again Lamb was out front, again followed by Camacho and Chomko, followed by Ken Blackwell. After injuring his back in the first moto, McIlvaine called it a day and packed it in.

With the number of laps shortened due to the dwindling daylight, the start was even more critical, and Lamb was going to make sure a victory would be his. Despite a last-lap attempt by Camacho, Lamb took that the victory. Camacho finished second, and Blackwell held off a charging Chomko for third.

Lamb (1-1) took the overall, followed by Camacho (2-2) in second and Chomko (3-4) in third.

In the current tough economy, racers still look to motocross racing as an outlet for their leisure time and money. Raceway Park's 2009 season was a success, with great racer turnout and excellent track conditions throughout the year. Keep an eye on the website at www.racewaypark.com for the 2010 schedule.
