California Triple Crown
Round 2: Milestone Raceway

Epstein, Burns Battle It Out at Milestone

RIVERSIDE, CA

The second round of Triple Crown was another success. The Milestone Raceway crew was spectacular and the track was outstanding. With 21 motos, it's obvious that there was a great turnout. With only three rounds in the series, riders knew that there would be no room for mistakes at this round; they would have to ride their best and put in great finishes. Last round's winner for the 250 Intermediate and 250 Open classes, Bryce Stewart, did not show up to Milestone for the second round; therefore, it was open season for up-and-coming stars on this day.Dillan Epstein 1 at Milestone Raceway 2009 1108

In the 250 Intermediate class, it was a great day for Dillan Epstein (1, above). In the first moto, he got a second-place start, behind Jessie Huntley. Although Huntley was riding exceptionally well, Epstein was able to dispose of him quite quickly. Huntley did his best to stay with Epstein but eventually tightened up and fell off the pace of his fellow Kawasaki rider. There was an unbelievable group of fast riders behind Huntley, however, and unfortunately for Austin Burns (141, below right), he was caught in the middle. Burns did eventually make it by such riders as Zach Peddie, Brandon Scharer and Shawn Gritten and placed himself in the third position on the track. The race can only go so long, and eventually the black-and-white flag did come out. Epstein took the win, Huntley stayed solid in second, and Burns worked his way up to third.Austin Burns 141 at Milestone Raceway 2009 1108

The second moto was all déjà vu. Epstein got out front and began to check out on the field. Huntley was working his magic in second, but Burns got a better start than he did in the first moto, and he made his way around Huntley, but Epstein was gone. As they finished up their final lap around the track, Epstein was once again the leader out front; he took the overall win for the day, with Burns settling for second and Huntley finishing strong in third.

Although Epstein seemed unstoppable in Intermediate competition, the case was a tad different in the 250 Open and Schoolboy contests. Burns was able to take the overall from him in Schoolboy, which not only helped him in the points, it made the two riders tied in points for the series. This sets up an amazing race that will take place on December 13 at Perris Raceway, site of the third and final round of the entire series. Also, credit must be given to Huntley, who not only put in great finishes in the 250 Intermediate and Schoolboy classes but also took the win, over Epstein, in the 250 Open class. It has been said over and over that Jessie Huntley is one rising star who sponsors must keep their eyes on.

It is quite obvious that the racing was amazing, and with that added pressure of the points being tied in the Schoolboy class, round three will be a must-see event.
