AMP/GFI Fall Series
Round 6: Oatfield Raceway

Pearson Leads the Pack

TURLOCK, CA

The final round of the AMP Fall Series was held at the Oatfield Raceway. It had rained earlier in the week, allowing the dirt to soften up and the AMP crew to make some track changes, including a new finish-line whoop section. The riders got acclimated to the new section during Saturday's practice and prepared themselves for Sunday's racing.Connor Pearson 126 at Oatfield 2009 1108

One of the first motos of the day was for the Supermini class. Amateur title holder Connor Pearson (126, above) had his work cut out for him, as he struggled with his starts. Bruno Moreda hopped out front aboard his YZ85 and took off like a rocket, trailed by Marcus Nims and Logan Baker. As each lap went by, Pearson and another rider, Cole Barbieri, were charging through, trying to catch Moreda. Pearson made some quick moves on Baker and Nims and left Barbieri back in fourth, fighting with Nims and Baker. By the final lap, Pearson had caught Moreda, and he knew where he could make the pass. Pearson waited until he had three corners to go and dived it in on Moreda to take the win. Nims finished third, and Barbieri was fourth.

In moto two, Barbieri got out front, with Pearson and Moreda buried back in the pack. On lap two, Pearson moved riders out of his way and went from seventh to second and then slowly started chipping away at Barbieri's lead. Baker and Nims followed up the front two, waiting for the battle to unfold. Sure enough, on the last lap, a mistake by Barbieri allowed Pearson to take the win and Baker to slip by for second. Nims finished fourth. Moreda had a horrific last-lap crash that he was lucky to walk away from.

Pearson went on to walk away from the field in the 85 Open and 85 Intermediate classes as well - a nice, clean sweep for Connor Pearson on his Mach 1/RPM-backed Yamaha.Ty Keenom 127 at Oatfield 2009 1108

As usual, there was more great racing in the 250 and 450 Intermediate classes. All of these riders entered the Four-Stroke Open class as well to bring home some more factory contingency money. Tyler Bereman blasted out of the gate in the first Four-Stroke Open moto. Ty Keenom (127, above) was railing the inside and outside lines, trying to make one work to pass Bereman. On lap three, Bereman stuck the front end into a corner and, in his words, "heard a pop" in his knee, ending his day completely. Keenom settled for the easy win in moto one, knowing no other wins would come that easily. Robert Noftz (701, below right) put on one of the strongest charges of the day as he went from 13th on lap one to second at the finish. Drew Thomas worked his way forward to finish third.Robert Noftz 701 at Oatfield 2009 1108

"I'm either going to hit the gate or win," Noftz declared before moto two.

Noftz rocketed out of the gate aboard his Yamaha 450 and took off. Noftz knew Keenom was hot on his tail but never looked back to see where he was. Keenom stayed about four seconds behind Noftz but couldn't catch him. On lap two, Mick Pernsteiner moved into third, in front of Davey Blair, and that's how they finished.

Noftz and Keenom had more competition in the 450 Intermediate class, with Mark Braden and J.B. Buller getting in there to mix things up. Moto one ended up with Noftz getting the win, over Braden, Buller and Keenom.

In moto two, Braden jumped out front and put down some solid laps. Noftz stayed right on his rear wheel but couldn't catch him. Buller and Keenom diced it out, and Buller got the better of Keenom. Noftz took the overall victory, with Braden in second, Keenom in third and Buller fourth.

Keenom wasn't going to settle for seconds and thirds; he wanted some wins for himself. He did just that in the 250 Intermediate class and the Schoolboy class. After a few years of bad luck and injuries, Ty Keenom can't wait to get back out there and show his competitors at the Amateur Nationals that he's still got the speed to win titles.
