Cole Tompkins (90, left) made his 85cc class debut a successful one by running away with both 85cc Beginner motos at Los Angeles County Raceway during the third round of the Kal-Gard Lubricants-backed California Racing Club Sponsorship Series.
Opening-moto action saw Tompkins put his Kal-Gard/Leatt/Zeal Racing-backed YZ85 into the point position at the drop of the gate, ahead of Ryan Pekarek, James De Arman and Tyler Martinez. Tompkins set a pace that saw him pull away from the rest of the field by a few seconds per lap, and by time the checkers fell he was long gone. Pekarek and De Arman were glued together in a battle over second place until De Arman went down on the last lap and dropped to a fourth-place finish, behind Kristian Jimenez.
Moto two was a duplicate of the first, as Tompkins quickly established a lead, with Pekarek and De Arman arguing over the runner-up position. Tompkins dominated every inch of the race for a convincing sweep. This time it was Pekarek's turn to take a soil sample with time running out, and De Arman greeted the checkers in second place for second overall on the day. Jimenez went 3-3 to edge out the 2-4 score of Pekarek, with Devin Hovey (5-5) rounding out the top five finishers.
Kawasaki-mounted Garrett West (187, right) continues to be the one to beat in the 250 Beginner ranks during the Sponsorship Series, and this day was more of the same, as he used another perfect 1-1 showing to get the job done. Thomas Spalliero and Jasun Spriggs traded second place back and forth throughout moto one, with Spriggs prevailing on the white-flag lap. Spriggs gated in second place in moto two, with Spalliero slowly reeling him in and then pulling off a last-lap pass to secure second in the final standings on his 3-2 effort. Heath Hatcher went 4-4, behind the 2-3 tally of Spriggs.
Bob Burns easily ran off with the Super Senior Amateur opening-moto victory. Bob Dunham held off Denny Ryan for a second-place finish. Burns was a no-show when the gate dropped in moto two, which left the overall on the day to whomever finished better between Ryan and Dunham. Ryan was quickest out of the gate, but by lap two Dunham had moved into the top spot, where he would stay for the next five laps - until Ryan retaliated with a pass of his own to claim the overall on the day. Scott McDonall went 4-3 for third on his YZ250, ahead of Paul Lax.
Ryan Gould (383, below) kept his 450 Novice moto-win streak in this series alive with a close victory over Brandt Locey (1) in moto one. Bryan Mullin, who finished third in moto one, led the charge for a little over a lap in the second outing before Brandt took control. Gould went down on lap two, while Brandt checked out with a 20-second lead to score the class win on the afternoon. Mullin's 3-2 tally topped the 1-4 score of Gould for the second-place trophy. Kevin Vandermark (4-3) and Dennis McWilliams (5-5) claimed fourth and fifth overall, respectively.
