Vet X Xtreme Prize Series
Round 4: Racetown 395

Kuehnel Conquers Racetown

ADELANTO, CAPaul Kuehnel 451 at Racetown 395 2009 1025

Vet X hit the halfway milestone in the Xtreme Prize Series as round four took to the high-desert Racetown 395 track. This venue is always a favorite of the racers, so this round brought 225 riders to the gates; so far this series has been well attended by the vet racers.

Being the most popular series on the Vet X schedule, this series always brings out the strongest competition, and many classes have several riders battling for dominance. The Over 28 VX2 Intermediate class is always one of those that features tight racing at each round. Moto one kicked off with the riders charging through the high-banked first turn. Emerging from the pack early on was Too Tech Racing/O'Neal-backed Paul Kuehnel (451, right), followed by Curtis Hanson and Ron Utaski. Hanson and Utaski were battling throughout the early laps for second, while William Vealey worked his way through the pack and caught up to them, turning it into a three-way skirmish for the runner-up position, giving Kuehnel a chance to put some distance on the field. As the laps clicked off, Utaski got a grasp on second, but Hanson and Vealey were still charging behind him. Vealey got past Hanson with a lap to go, and when the checkers flew, it was Kuehnel crossing first, followed by Utaski and Vealey.

The second race was a much different story. Utaski charged into the early lead, leaving Vealey and Kuehnel back in the pack. Kuehnel worked his way up to second by lap four, and Utaski had maneuvered his way through the crowd to move into third on the same lap. The charge was on for the lead, though, as Kuehnel was working to carve into what was at one point a four-second lead by Utaski. With two laps to go, Kuehnel was able to catch and pass Utaski, putting him into second. At the end, Kuehnel charged across the finish in first, followed by Utaski and Vealey. This gave Kuehnel the overall victory with 1-1 finishes, followed by Utaski (2-2) and Vealey (3-3).Gary Ivin 149 at Racetown 395 2009 1025

Gary Ivin (149, left) put his stamp on the 43-49 Novice class, as he split moto wins with Roy Abbott but managed to take the overall victory. FMF-backed Ivin was able to make easy work out of the first moto, dominating the class with a 17-second lead ahead of Scott Fichter and Joe Sutter.

The second race looked like it was going to be a repeat of the first, as Ivin charged out to another big lead, with Abbott a distant second. On the white-flag lap, Ivin made a mistake, allowing Abbott to catch up and overtake him. Abbott crossed the line first, ahead of Ivin, with Fichter crossing in third, several seconds back. Ivin still took the overall victory with his 1-2 punch, followed by Abbott (4-1) and Fichter (2-3).
