Round 2: Edwards Air Force Base

Burgess Blasts Them Away on the Base

EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE, CATom Burgess 87 at Edwards AFB 2009 1025

Honda-mounted Tom Burgess (87, right) took no prisoners as he dominated both motos of the Super Senior Expert class as the California Racing Club traveled northward to the Desert Wheels Motorcycle Club-prepped sand track within the confines of Edwards Air Force Base for round two of the Kal Gard Lubricants-backed Sponsorship Series.

When the gate dropped for opening-moto action, it was Burgess launching off the start with the early lead, ahead of Garry Conner, Don Bizzy and Keevan Acevedo. Burgess quickly put a couple of seconds between himself and Conner, who suddenly had his hands full with Bizzy and Acevedo. Mark Raiche joined the fray, making for a great four-rider battle over the runner-up position that would last for most of the moto. Bizzy finally got the upper hand on the penultimate lap and pulled away from the other three, but by then there was no catching Burgess, who had nearly 15 seconds of breathing room. Conner held off Acevedo at the checkers for third, with Raiche a close fifth.

Burgess was off to another great start in moto two to lead Acevedo and Raiche. Bizzy went down in the first turn and was unable to continue. Acevedo stayed glued to Burgess' back fender for the first couple of circuits before Burgess upped his pace and pulled away for a convincing sweep of the field. Acevedo easily finished in the second spot, which earned him the second-place trophy, over Conner (3-4) and Raiche (5-3).James De Arman 75 at Edwards AFB 2009 1025

Sponsorship Series opening-round 85cc Beginner winner Ryan Pekarek and James De Arman (75, left) went at it over the lead in moto one, with De Arman gaining the upper hand at about the midway point. De Arman appeared to have the win in the bag until he lost his front end in a sandy berm and went down with only half a lap remaining. Pekarek collected the win, with De Arman salvaging second. Kristian Jimenez and Devin Hovey argued over third, with Jimenez prevailing.

Moto two was a repeat of the first, as Pekarek and De Arman fought over the top spot - but this time it was Pekarek who went down in the sand. De Arman motored away with the moto victory and the overall honors on his FMF/Spy-backed Honda. Pekarek put in a great effort, coming form last to finish in second place for second overall. Jimenez was again third, followed by Hovey.

Blake Steelgrave was untouchable in the first Senior Amateur contest, going wire to wire for the win. Robert Ives Jr. suffered a poor start, and by the time he made his way up into second place on lap four, there was no catching Steelgrave. Brian McConnell held down second place until Ives took over, but McConnell held on for a third-place finish, over Roy Krull and Lucky Feinstein.

The second moto was one of the best races of the day, as Steelgrave and Ives were inseparable at the front of the pack. Ives hounded Steelgrave for the entire moto before finally outbraking his friend at the end of Edwards' long back straight to take the lead for good. Ives's 2-1 tally got the better of the 1-2 score of Steelgrave for the overall, with Krull's 4-3 finishes topping the 3-4 effort of McConnell for third in the final standings.Ryan Gould 383 at Edwards AFB 2009 1025

Ryan Gould (383, right) led a little more than a lap of the first 450 Novice moto before a fall dropped him back to third, behind Bryan Mullin and Kevin Vandermark. Gould got back around Vandermark and was slowly reeling in Mullin but time ran out and he had to settle for a close second-place finish.

Mullin absconded with the holeshot in moto two, but by lap three it was Gould out front and pulling away for the win. Vandermark greeted the checkers in third, followed by Dennis McWilliams.
