Round 1: Los Angeles County Raceway

Gould Scores at CRC Sponsorship Series Opener

PALMDALE, CA

Ryan Gould flew his ASAP Powersports Kawasakis to both the 250 and 450 Novice-class wins at Los Angeles County Raceway during the opening round of the Kal Gard Lubricants-backed California Racing Club's 2009 Sponsorship Series.Ryan Gould 383 at LACR 2009 1018

When starter Anthony Barbacovi dropped the gate to unleash the opening 250 Novice moto, Ryan Gould (383) led the field down the start straight, ahead of Dominic Purrillo (829), Robert Angell (279), Austin McWaters (719) and Dalton Weyer. Weyer was around Purrillo for second place on lap one, but that was all the passing that was going to take place, as Gould continued on uncontested for the win. Purrillo finished a lonely second, ahead of McWaters and Angell.

Gould bolted out to an immediate lead in moto two, but it was Weyer running out front after a single lap on the J.B. Memorial Track. Gould latched on to the back fender of Weyer and would hound the Honda rider. Coming up out of the "pit" section of the track, Weyer overshot a small, sandy berm, and when he tried to jump back into the main line, Gould was right there, and the two collided. Weyer ended up on the ground while Gould motored away to eventually take the win by a comfortable margin. McWaters benefited from Weyer's miscue, as he finished in the second spot for second in the overall standings. Purrillo went 3-3 for third, followed by the 2-5 tally of Weyer and the 5-4 score of Angell.

The 450 Novice class was pretty much a cakewalk for the KX450F-mounted Gould, as he absconded with both holeshots and never looked back. Garrett Powell (4-2) came out on top of a points tie with Dennis McWilliams (3-3) and Kevin Vandermark (2-4) to collect the second-place trophy.Ryan Pekarek 59 at LACR 2009 1018

Ryan Pekarek (59, right) has been on fire as of late in the 85cc Beginner ranks, and this day proved to be more of the same, as the Pit Pro/Cycle Gear-backed Kawasaki pilot easily outran his competition in both motos. Kristian Gimersez held down second place for most of the first moto before a fall dropped him back to an eventual fifth-place finish. Devin Hovey ended up being the runner-up at the checkers, ahead of Tyler Martinez. Gimersez kept it on two wheels in moto two to finish in second place for fourth overall, behind the 2-4 score of Hovey and the 3-5 finishes of Martinez.Nicholas Mercier 96 at LACR 2009 1018

Nicholas Mercier (96, left), on his Axo/SixSixOne/Pro Taper-sponsored Suzuki, proved to be untouchable, as he went four for four to dominate both the 85cc (12-13) and 85cc Open classes. Cody Miller finished second to Mercier in both age-class outings, with Casey Kile and Hayden Joseph earning third and fourth overall, respectively. The 85cc (7-11) winner, Deegan Vonlossberg, was runner-up to Mercier in each Open-class contest, followed by Miller and Kile.
