Vet X Xtreme Prize Series
Round 3: Perris Raceway

Stevenson Charges to Victory

PERRIS, CA

Perris Raceway hosted round three of the Vet X Xtreme Prize Series, and there were a host of fresh changes to the track since the previous race the club held at this venue. The racers showed up to find a refreshed front section of the track and a new 100-foot triple. The track was prepped to perfection as the morning races roared off the gate. The racing in the series is getting very tight in many classes, with many riders coming back from a long summer break refreshed and ready to do battle in the biggest prize series Vet X has each year.Sam Stevenson 27 at Perris Raceway 2009 1011

The competition thrives in every class in this series, including the Beginner classes. In the 28-39 Beginner class, two separate riders claimed moto wins. The first moto started off with Patrick Killilea streaking out to an early lead over the pack, with Sam Stevenson (27, right) in pursuit. Killilea rode a nearly perfect race and was able to maintain a big lead over Stevenson. At the line, Killilea took the win with an eight-second lead over Stevenson. John Heath worked his way into third.

In the second moto, Heath claimed the early lead and battled with Killilea in the opening laps as the two traded positions, while Stevenson was working his way through the pack after a poor start. With Stevenson making a charge up to the leaders, Killilea made a mistake, letting both Heath and Stevenson by. At that point, Stevenson had his momentum at full speed, and he passed Heath later in the lap to take the lead. When the checkers flew, Stevenson had the win, followed by Heath and Killilea, who was able to recover and make his way back through the pack. The overall win was owned by Stevenson (2-1), followed by Killilea (1-3) and Heath (3-2).

The 43-49 Amateur class also had plenty of action and two separate moto winners, neither of whom was able to capture the overall win. Jimmy Matiasevich scrambled to the lead early in the first moto, pushing his way out front, with Clint McKinnon in the runner up position. As the laps tallied up, Matiasevich maintained the lead until the end, with McKinnon following in second, and Carlos Neves working his way through the pack to third.

When the gate dropped for the second moto, it was Randy Davis charging to the lead, with McKinnon in second. McKinnon pushed through the entire moto but was unable to catch Davis, who crossed the finish line first, followed by McKinnon and Neves. The overall victory for the day belonged to McKinnon with consistent rides and his pair of second-place finishes, followed by Matiasevich (1-4) and Davis (5-1).

The 36-42 Novice overall victory belonged to Mike Gee (1-1) after fighting off challenges from Bernard Daily and Michael Penta. The second step on the podium belonged to Penta, with a pair of hard-fought charges through the pack to a pair of runner-up finishes. The third-place trophy went to Steve Herrmann (6-3).
