The second annual Southeastern Motocross of Teams Championship went off with a bang on the same weekend as the Motocross of Nations. The event was held at Alma Motocross Park. Last year, Team Dirt Rockers took the victory, with the big bikes and minibikes coming together to form teams. This year the minibikes had their own teams, while the big-bike riders competed for their own team championship. The event brings family and friends together for camaraderie. People even make new friends to form teams, and the fun begins for everyone.
The first moto took to the line, as families, friends and spectators lined the fences. Team USA team rider Tommy Maxey (60, above) took the holeshot in the 85cc division, and the MSR/Maxima/Smith/Pirelli-sponsored rider led the field, followed by Justin Hendrix, Max Darling, Jake Johnson and Nick Sweat. Maxey pulled away for the moto win, putting his team in the lead for the championship. Bostwick's Darling passed Gemini Cycle Supply's Hendrix to take the second spot for Team Fearless 2. Fearless Cycles' Johnson kept Sweat in check to keep fourth.
The 50cc riders were next on the track. Maxey's teammate Joshua Gibbs took the holeshot. Gibbs powered away to the win, putting his team in command with two moto wins. Following Gibbs on the first lap were Case Reynolds, Caleb Rentz, Trinity Harrison and Hayden Wiggins. Reynolds and Rentz pulled away to take second and third at the checkers, respectively. The battle for fourth raged on the entire moto between Harrison and Wiggins. The two swapped places a couple of times. Wiggins got the better drive out of the last turn to take fourth by about one wheel's length.
Going into the last Mini moto, Team USA had the best chance of winning the championship, with one rider in each division. When the gate dropped, their team rider Baylor Sims was out front, followed by Grayson Vinson, Harley Johns, Morgan Johnson and Lance McConnell. The battle was for third, between Johns and last year's winning-team member Johnson. In the end, the O'Neal/Monster Energy/Dunlop-sponsored Johnson got by Johns for third. Sims went on to win the 65cc moto, over Vinson.
Team USA won with a low score of three. Team Fearless 2 was second with nine points, over Team KAW with the better last-moto score. Team McRae Roosters was fourth, with 13 points. Rounding out the top five was Team Kicker, by only one point over Team MX Girls, comprised of Morgan Johnson, Trinity Harrison and Lauren Turner.
The big-bike divisions were run last. Zach Crosby was the fastest of the day, taking the moto win. Stellar Graphics/Scott-sponsored Myles Heath led early but finished second, winning the C division. Cycle Gear's Kyle Edwards was running third until a big crash moved up Alistair Prentice, followed by Kings Bay Honda's Steve Petty. Weston Rountree won the D division by about five seconds over Logan Dixon. Josh Morgan (131, below) was part of the winning Team Fearless team.
