The third round of the Southern Atlantic Motocross Series went smooth as ice. The temperatures weren't anywhere near freezing, though, as the mercury hovered just under the 90 mark, with cloudy skies overhead. The track was groomed to perfection at the start of the day, but by the end it had started to get a little bumpy.
One rider who excelled in the conditions was I-95 Toyota/JAM Electric-sponsored rider Kyle Edwards (317, above). The rider from nearby Brunswick won all four motos, taking two overall class victories. Edwards won the 250 C and Schoolboy classes with very little resistance.
Edwards jumped out into the lead in the first 250 C moto. Following Edwards was Josh Swilpa, Panolin's Paxton Edgy, Spencer Waters and Chad Thayer. Swilpa tried to keep Edwards honest, as the two took the first two spots at the checkers. There was a tussle for the last podium position among Edgy, Waters and Matt Stansberry. Edgy finally lost third, as Stansberry pushed his way through. Edgy repaid Stansberry on the next lap, while Waters just watched from a few bikelengths back. With two laps to go, Waters made his move past Edgy, while Stansberry was back up to third. Stansberry made a mistake on the last lap, and Waters found himself in third. Rounding out the top five were Edgy and Alistair Prentice.
The second moto saw Stansberry abscond with the holeshot, with Edwards close behind. Behind the two were Swilpa, Prentice and Edgy. Edwards took the lead on lap two. Prentice, Edgy and Thayer all moved up to third through fifth, respectively. Swilpa fell to sixth, but immediately started passing riders, first moving by Thayer and then Edgy on one lap. The next lap, Swilpa passed Prentice for third. On the final lap, Swilpa made it by Stansberry for the runner-up spot. At the checkers, it was Edwards, Swilpa, Stansberry, Prentice and Edgy.
The Schoolboy class was more of the same for Edwards, with two moto wins. Zach Crosby (527, above), the fastest rider for the day, did lead the whole bunch, winning the 16-29 A/B class. The first moto saw Edgy pass Waters to finish second in the Schoolboy class. Prentice ended up fourth. Prentice passed Waters in the second moto to capture second and take the runner-up position.
O'Neal/Monster Energy/Dunlop/Scott-sponsored rider Morgan Johnson (159, above) won the Girls class, but she had a little tougher time in the Junior Mini class. MSR's Tommy Maxey led the first moto of the Junior Mini class, followed by Capital One Cycles' Nick Sweat, Jake Johnson, Seth Hansberry and Morgan Johnson. Maxey went on to win the moto, over Sweat and Jake, while Morgan moved past Hansberry for fourth. The second moto was more of the same, as the top five finished in the same order.
Captain Joe's Seafood's Joshua Gibbs won the 65 (7-9) class with two moto wins. Lance McConnell took second overall with a 2-3 score, over Baylor Sims' 5-2 finishes.
