Round 8: Perris Raceway

Leib Wins First Pro Race, Silverstein Dominates the 85s

PERRIS, CAMichael Leib 170 at Perris Raceway 2009 0919

It was the second-to-last race of the series, and a lot of new faces showed up at Perris Raceway to go up against some of the fastest riders in Southern California. Fresh off of a championship at Loretta Lynn Ranch, Michael Leib (170, above) was about to make his Pro debut. Kyle Engle was probably the favorite, but could he hold it together for an overall win? Andrew Silverstein was there as well, and he was putting in impressively quick lap times.

In the first 250 Pro moto, Leib got the holeshot. Engle didn't get the best of starts, but he made his way through the field quickly. Halfway through the first lap, Engle went down and, unfortunately for him, went back to last place. Behind Leib were Jack Garrabrant and Kyle Behling. Would Engle be able to charge back? The answer was no: He had a hard time starting his bike, and when the engine finally ignited, Leib was about to lap him. Engle had too much pride to let Leib by, so he sped up and tried to see if he could catch up to anyone. Leib could taste an overall victory, but he would definitely have to keep it on two wheels for the next race.

Moto two was extremely exciting. Leib worked his magic with another great start, but Engle made a move to the inside in the fourth turn and managed to take the lead. A few turns later, Leib retaliated by putting his Honda in front of his opponent. The two riders went by the finish line on the first lap side by side, and the excited fans were on their feet. When they went up the hill, Engle brake-checked Leib and went into first place for the final time. Leib decided to calm it down and settle for second, but that would still give him the overall win for the night. Engle took second overall, and Garrabrant rounded off the top three.

Leib not only won the 250 class, he also swept both 450 Pro motos, against Nick Schmidt.Andrew Silverstein 58 at Perris Raceway 2009 0919

Andrew Silverstein (58, above) was most certainly riding spectacularly. He was doing some jumps that not even the Pros or Intermediates were willing to attempt. He won every single moto he contested with a demanding lead.

Austin Burns also showed up to race, and he did exceptionally well. He won the Schoolboy class, in front of Jessie Huntley, and got a third place in 250 Intermediate competition.Johnny Jelderda 275 at Perris Raceway 2009 0919

"Jumpin' Johnny" Jelderda (275, above) won both motos in the 250 and 450 Intermediate classes, making a statement for his Pro-class debut after this series.

There's one more round to go, and it's certain the series will end with a bang. Expect to see everyone hanging it out and going faster than ever. Interested in Hot Summer Nights or Perris Raceway? Please visit www.perrisraceway.com for more information.
