BUCKEYE, AZ
Robbie Salinas (122, left) made the trek from Cathedral City, California, to Buckeye, Arizona, and took the top prize in the 250 Junior class at round two of the CMC Cactus State MX Series, presented by The Pit Enterprises, Amsoil and Dishman Motorsports at Arizona Cycle Park. Included in the race schedule was the first round of the Old School MX Series. Vintage and Post-Vintage motorcycles raced on a separate track, made especially for machinery of those eras.
Salinas absconded with the top spot at the start of the first moto and by the end of the first lap had opened up a two-second lead over the next three riders - Kyle Trudeau (493, left), James Singer and Joshua Henley. The lead grew another second as Salinas started the third lap. Henley kept the pressure on Singer through the first half of the course. Then, as the two entered the "Sand Pit" section, Henley got underneath Singer; the two brushed shoulders, disrupting Singer's momentum, and he went down.
Salinas went down just before the finish line, which allowed Trudeau to get around for first, followed by Henley. Then, on the white-flag lap, Henley fell, turning over second to Salinas.
Trudeau rode a mistake-free race and won the moto by 10 seconds over his closest pursuer, Salinas. Henley took third, followed by Brian Dukes, Brandon Deatherage and Bri Henry.
Salinas once again was leading the pack in the second moto, with Trudeau in second. Third was Henry, in her first race in the Junior Division (and she also took top honors in the Women's class). Meanwhile, Matt Moon pursued in fourth.
Lap two saw Moon move by Henry, while Singer was in front of Henley for fifth. Salinas and Trudeau pulled away from the rest of the pack. Singer passed Henry after the tabletop jump just before the sand section. Then Henley went by Henry on the succeeding lap. Trudeau laid his bike down on the last lap and dropped back to fifth. Salinas took first at the checkered flag, followed by Moon, Singer, Henley, Trudeau and Henry.
