RANCHO CORDOVA, CA
AMP Racing started out its 2009 fall series with a boom. With the annual Dodge Amateur National coming up, this would be the last chance for people to get a feel for the track. Four of the five major factories were paying factory contingency, and even with the bad economy, almost 600 entries were totaled up. With huge numbers came big classes, including the Pro classes.
Rusty Holland (335, above) jumped out in front of Austin Howell (681), Keith Knight (475), Kyle Summers (81), Topher Ingalls (986, behind Knight) and the rest of the 12-rider field in the first Four-Stroke Pro moto and appeared to be checking out. Howell quickly worked his way through the pack and into second and then started a charge on Rusty. Summers also had to work his way up, but by the time he made his way into third, Howell and Holland were gone. A lap before the white flag, Howell had run down Rusty and made the pass for the win.
Moto two's start was no different: It was Holland out front and Howell and Summers coming through. Summers moved into second, with Howell in tow. Summers put up a fight, but Howell was just too much. But by the time Howell had moved into second, Holland was too far out in front. Holland's 2-1 finishes gave him the overall.
As the motos got longer in the 450 Pro class, Summers found himself charging harder and ending up in front of Howell and Holland. In the first moto, Howell had some bad luck and rode to a fourth-place finish. Rookie Pro Keith Knight, aboard his Kawasaki 450, rode to a solid third place in moto one, behind Holland and Summers ahead.
Summers jumped out of the gate swinging in moto two, again passing Holland and getting away, with Howell and 250F rider Topher Ingalls following behind. Ingalls' 250F gave everything it had, and he finished third in moto two, behind Summers and Howell.
Summers' 1-1 garnered the overall, while Howell and Holland swapped fours and twos.
The 250F class had some exciting battles. Ingalls rocketed out of the gate on his Yamaha. Another rookie, Blake Jump, and local rider Wil McDonough were close behind. Howell got a bad start and worked his way past Jump and McDonough and started to chip away at Ingalls' lead. When the white flag flew, Howell was a bikelength behind Ingalls. Ingalls dropped the hammer and didn't fold under the pressure.
Moto two shook out the same way: with Howell pressuring Ingalls. A mistake by Ingalls left the door open for Howell, and he took the win. Howell and Ingalls swapped ones and twos, with the rookie Jump going 3-4.
