Southern Atlantic Motocross Series
Round 2: Alma Motocross Park

Maxey Motors Away at Alma

ALMA, GA

The second round of the Southern Atlantic Motocross Series arrived at the southeastern Georgia town of Alma. The weather was partly cloudy and warm. Owner James Westover had the track groomed to perfection, as always, for the day's event.Tommy Maxey 60 at Alma MX 2009 0830

Many riders rode two or three classes on the day, but the one who motored away to three class wins was Tommy Maxey (60, above). Fresh off his top-five finishes at Loretta Lynn Ranch, the MSR/Maxima/Pro Circuit/Pirelli/Smith-sponsored rider won the 85 (9-11), 65 Open and Supermini classes. The Bloomingdale, Georgia, rider led all but three laps on the day and won all six motos he entered.

The 85 (12-15) and 85 (9-11) classes raced at the same time, with the 12-15 riders getting a head start. Landon Jones led all riders, followed by Fly Racing's Austin Rue, Luke Haynes, Austin Walker and Jody Tindall. By lap two, Maxey started picking off the older riders and moved to fifth on the track. At halfway, Maxey moved into third, and he was closing fast on Rue. Jones ended up having bike problems after leading most of the moto. Rue took the lead, only to lose it on the last lap to Maxey. Rue won the 85 (12-15) portion, followed by Walker and Haynes. Maxey won the 85 (9-11) portion, followed by Redline Powersports' Tyler Wacter.

In the second moto, Jones had no bike troubles and went wire to wire for the win. Maxey moved up to second on the track, winning the 85 (9-11) class. Rue was next, taking the overall win in the 85 (12-15) class.

Maxey and Jones met in the Supermini class. Jones led the first half of the first moto until Maxey took the point position. Rue kept third the entire time, and Brian Castleberry moved up to take fourth. Mastercraft Roofing's Cody Tindall rounded out the top five.

The second moto was all Maxey's. Jones kept Maxey honest in second. Rue moved up through the pack to take third, passing Castleberry along the way.

The biggest class of the day was the 250 C class. Firedog Graphics' Alex Diaz took the lead and never looked back en route to taking the first-moto win. The rest of the positions were up for grabs, though. Aggressive Motorsports' Ethan Sims, Kyle Edwards (317, below) and Taylor Holt were in a battle for the runner-up spot. Sims was in second place until the halfway flag. Edwards and Holt got by to finish up second and third, respectively. Sims wound up fourth, and Jason Letellier moved up to fifth after starting seventh.Kyle Edwards 317 at Alma MX 2009 0830

In the second moto, it was Edwards' turn to lead. The Christopher Bean Coffee/Skateland 17/Riverside Reality rider led from flag to flag to take the moto win and the overall for the day. Sims stayed in second the entire time, holding off Holt at the checkers. Diaz could only muster a fourth-place finish, over Carson Villa.

Jason Quill won the Open Beginner class with a 2-1 score, over a gate full of riders. Logan Dixon took second overall with a 3-4 tally, over Joshua Stamper (1-6).
