Rounds 12/2: Birch Creek Motorsports Park

Hayes Hammers Birch Creek!

DANVILLE, VA

Riders were able to enjoy contesting two of the premier series in the country on the same day as Birch Creek hosted round 12 of the Victory Sports Mega Series, presented by Dunlop, and round two of the Liquid Performance Grand Championship series. With more than 500 riders hammering the 1.4-mile National track, a full range of challenges was provided for all of the participants. Promoters Ken Ferrell, Carl Reynolds and Rusty Reynolds were all on hand to give the riders the best possible experience!

Standout riders of the weekend included Team Green's Jacob Hayes, who won both motos in the Schoolboy Two, 250 B Lites and Four-Stroke Amateur classes. In the Pro division, Cody Robbins topped both the 250 and 450 A classes, and added a win in the Collegeboy class for good measure. The standout in the mini classes was Triangle Cycles/Serious MX rider Matt Burkeen from Cary, North Carolina; he won the 85cc (12-15), 85cc (9-13) and Supermini classes.

Kyle Peters outran his competition up the long, uphill Birch Creek start to lead the Schoolboy Two pack down the steep hill following the first turn. Hayes and Tony Archer followed. Peters opened up a small gap on lap one. Things stayed like that for two laps, but Hayes put on a charge on lap three, passing Peters for the lead. Peters was not finished yet; the two battled to the end of the moto, with Hayes coming out on top. He was followed by Frankie Lettieri, with Archer finishing in the third spot.

In moto two, Dylan Bantum grabbed the holeshot on a 250 two-stroke Suzuki and led Peters and Hayes over the tunnel jump. Hayes quickly passed Bantum for the lead, and Peters took over second spot on lap one. Bantum held on to third. There wasn't much drama in this one, as they circulated the track like a train. At the finish, the top five were Hayes, Peters, Bantum, Lettieri and Seth Caldwell.

In the largest class of the day, Pro Action rider Charlie Lewis led the 38-rider 250 C field into turn one. He was followed closely by Blake Lewis and Cody Rowe on the first lap, but he slowly began to gap them on lap two. On lap three, Blake Lewis fell out of the top five due to a crash, while Rowe made his way into the second spot, but by then he could not run down the very fast and smooth Charlie Lewis.

The second moto saw Charlie again lead the field on lap one, followed by Landon Gallimore and Blake. Rowe, who was second in moto one, was buried in the pack. Charlie quickly distanced himself from the second- and third-place riders, Gallimore and Caleb Mitchell. Gallimore faded quickly, while Blake Lewis passed four riders in one lap to take over the second spot. Charlie Lewis took the moto win and the overall victory - his second on the day. Blake Lewis was second in the moto, followed by Mitchell and Nick Wininger.
