ORANGEBURG, SC
A good turnout of riders were on hand, ready to go at it on this fast D-shaped quarter-mile track. Along with the normal class lineup, a special added bonus was the Race For Cash class, for amateurs only, which provided even more intense racing action to this always-exciting race program. With the qualifying heats in the books, the starting positions for the main events were set and ready for the start light to go green.
In the 0-200 class, "Flyin' Ryan" Rutland set a fast pace all the way to the finish for the win. Columbia's Staton Lomas (8, above) took the number-two spot, and Al Thomas Hughes was third.
In the MX Open class, several riders new to the sport put on a good show as they battled from the start to the checkered flag. Heat-race winner Steve Dyson took the top spot, with Mike Rissa second and Mike Spires crossing the line in third.
Tyler Rissa got the 50cc Four-Stroke win, with Wesley Brown second. Josh Goins topped the podium in both the 50cc Two-Stroke and Modified classes.
Upstate South Carolina's Chris Jones (28, above) was first to the finish in Open Novice competition, with Tom Tyner finishing second and Jerry Hardin third.
In Open Amateur action, Metter, Georgia's Zach Olliff put his Ed Salley Racing-sponsored Yamaha out front early and held on for the win. Rutland was second and Lomas placed third.
Scott Morgan found the fast line to the finish for the win in Over 50 action, with Tom Tyner putting together a good ride for second.
Greater Works-sponsored Rick Lovette kept it up on two wheels to the finish with the win in Vintage 250. Al Thomas Hughes was able to accomplish the same in 70-125 competition.
In the Pro Am main event, heat winner Jerry Steele was a couple of ponies shy of having enough to keep pace with veteran Expert Garth Brow, who put down some blisteringly fast lap times to take the win. At the finish, it was Steele in second and Eddie Salley in third.
With the money on the line in the Race For Cash class, the "Zach Attack" was back again, as Zach Olliff proved to be the one to beat. Olliff turned in some very impressive lap times as he rode a smooth and nearly flawless race en route to the win. Jones gave it his all but was unable to keep pace with the Yamaha-mounted Olliff. Ken "The Kid" Steele had his hands full with a pair of young hotshoes, Lomas and Rutland, as the three battled for third. The young guys tried every available line lap after lap but could not loosen the veteran Steele's grip on the final pay-window position.
