Perris Raceway Hot Summer Nights
Round 6: Perris Raceway

Mumford Destroys the Field

PERRIS, CACarson Mumford 122 at Perris Raceway 2009 0829

The track wasn't different, the weather was still hot, and the racers at Perris Raceway were as quick as ever! Not only the older riders, but also the young bucks. One rider in particular who was fast was Carson Mumford (122, left). He may not be very big, but he sure can ride! Mumford won all four motos in which he raced on the 50s, and he had a demanding lead on some top competitors such as Stilez Robertson and Dustin Barnes.

In the first moto of the Super Pee Wee class, Mumford was the first kid to the first turn. Railing around the berms on his 50cc Cobra, he began to put a little bit of a gap on Stilez, who was in second. Barnes was sitting quietly in third, but ready to pounce. Pushing his hardest to stay with Mumford, Robertson went down. This mistake left open a window of opportunity for Barnes, and he started his charge. Pushing his bike to the rev-limit, he went down as well. Now that Mumford had successfully gotten rid of his toughest competitors, he rode his way to the checkers. Barnes and Stilez came in behind him.

In the second race, Stilez put his skills to work and got in front of Mumford. He was not going to let his rival beat him again - but he had no choice. Mumford was, to say the least, on his game. Barnes rode consistently in the third slot again. Mumford made his way around the National champ and won his first overall for the night.

The 50 (7-8) class was as entertaining as a dog with peanut butter on the roof of his mouth. Just in case you have never witnessed a dog with peanut butter on the roof of his mouth, trust me - it is quite thrilling. Once again, Mumford grabbed the holeshot. Looking for revenge, Stilez took the lead within seconds. A little shocked, Mumford followed him around for a while. A little too impatient, Mumford took the lead back. It looked like both riders were going about the same speed, but Stilez quickly dropped off the pace and took another second.

In the second moto, Mumford repeated like a broken record. He won his fourth moto of the night, and his second overall victory. It's certain that the young racer was more than thrilled.

Obviously, Mumford can ride. Just as obviously, the Hot Summer Nights Series is as electrifying as a thunderstorm. Already six rounds in, it feels like this series just started. The weather has been extremely hot each weekend, and the track has been quite rough, which means the riders must be well conditioned. Those who think they might want to race any of the last two Hot Summer Nights rounds, or those who may just be interested in Perris Raceway, please visit www.perrisraceway.com for more information.
