PALMDALE, CA
Zack Wiley (97, left) and Joshua Miles each picked up a 250 Novice moto win, with Wiley getting his in the all-important tie-breaking second moto to claim the overall win at Los Angeles County Raceway during the Simi Valley Cycles-sponsored round of the California Racing Club's Hot Summer Nights Motocross Series.
Opening-moto racing saw Miles jump out to an early lead, ahead of Ryan Hernandez and Nick De George. Miles ran uncontested for most of the race until Hernandez started applying some pressure with time running out. Hernandez couldn't find a way around the Honda-mounted Miles and would have to be content with a close second at the checkers. Wiley crossed the line in third, followed by De George.
De George led the charge in moto two for a little more than a lap before Hernandez took over the top spot. Hernandez would run out front for the next three circuits of the J.B. Memorial Track until a bobble dropped him back to fourth place. Wiley inherited the lead, and he would outrun the others to claim the overall on his 3-1 effort. De George finished in second place for third in the final standings, behind the 1-3 tally of Miles.
Brennan McGinnis put his YZ450F out front when the gate dropped in 450 Novice first-moto action, and he ran out front until Derrick Hernandez (214, right) finally caught and passed him at about the midway point of the nine-lap race. Once out front, Derrick pulled away for the win. McGinnis finished all by himself in second place. Kevin Vandermark turned a good start into a third-place finish, ahead of Brandon Yates, Dalton Weyer and Bryan Mullin.
It was all Hernandez in moto two, as the Zeal Racing-backed Yamaha rider gained control of the lead on lap one and never looked back. McGinnis Kept Hernandez in his sights for the entire race but couldn't quite challenge for the lead. Vandermark greeted the checkers in third again, followed by Weyer and Yates.
Kawasaki-mounted Thomas Spalliero continues to be hot stuff in the 250 Beginner ranks as of late, and this night was no exception, as the Desert Auto Wrecking-sponsored teenager reeled off a couple of nice holeshots and then proceeded to walk away from his competition. While Spalliero was cruising out front, Steven Leatham and Jasun Spriggs were arguing over who was going to take home the second-place trophy. Leatham prevailed with a 3-2 tally, over the 2-3 score of Spriggs. Brad Reinhart (5-4) and Kaley Read (4-5) earned fourth and fifth overall, respectively.
