Vet X Insano Inferno Series
Round 3: Competitive Edge MX

A Championship for Luke!

HESPERIA, CA

Vet X wrapped up its summer series on the rolling hills of Competitive Edge MX, and the final round offered a respite from the hot summer weather of the previous rounds. More than 200 racers showed up to finish off the short series to try to claim the series championship of their respective classes. One of those riders looking to claim a championship was Yamaha-mounted Wes Luke (226, below), in the Over 28 Novice Open class.Wes Luke 226 at Competitive Edge 2009 0823

In both motos, Luke put in dominating rides over Ray Poltack to claim the overall win. Poltack had a battle on his hands for second in both motos with Tom Lattenhauer. Every point counted for Poltack, and he was determined to claim as many as he could, taking the runner-up position in both races and putting Lattenhauer in third. When the final points were tallied up, Luke's overall win also was enough to claim the class championship by a mere two-point margin over Poltack.

The Over 28 VX1 Intermediate class was once again full of action. In the first moto, Shawn Bushnell got out to the early lead, holding on for six of the seven laps. Jason McGuidwin was in a solid second place, and on the last lap that was to his advantage, as Bushnell made a mistake, allowing McGuidwin to pass for the win, followed by Jason Gaines and Bushnell.

The gate drop in the second race again saw Bushnell take the early lead, with McGuidwin again in second, followed by Gaines. With Bushnell in a comfortable lead, McGuidwin was trying his hardest to make up time, but he was unable to keep up the pace and dropped to third, allowing Gaines to move into second. Bushnell was able to take the class win with his 3-1 performance, followed by Gaines (2-2) in second and McGuidwin (1-3) in third.Bob Marino 43 at Competitive Edge 2009 0823

The Over 50 Novice contest got off to a roaring start as Yamaha rider Bob Marino (43, above) shot out to a huge holeshot, getting a big lead on the class, ahead of Phil Cruz and Steve Hinckley. As the laps clicked off, the challengers were unable to close the gap that Marino had built up through the race, and he was able to claim the checkered flag.

The second moto again saw Marino get an early lead, but Cruz was determined to make him work hard to stay in front. Through the opening laps, Cruz closed the leader's margin down to less than a second, pushing Marino and battling for the lead. Cruz was unable to keep the pace in the final laps, and Marino was able to put a gap between himself and Cruz. Marino again won the race, giving him a 1-1 tally and the overall win, followed by Cruz (2-2). Dennis Burns was on the final step of the podium, scoring 4-3 finishes for the day.
