The Southern Atlantic Motocross Series kicked off at Live Oak MX Park with the first of four rounds. The day was hot, with no rain in sight, so the crew kept the track watered to eliminate the potential of dust. This weekend, the track was honored to have one of a pro from Massachusetts on hand to show everyone the fast way around the track. Jared Dewolfe was traveling back up north for the next National round at Southwick and decided to do some laps. Dewolfe won the overall victories in the Open A and 16-29 A/B classes.
Local rider Jason Waters took both holeshots in the Open A class. Waters led the first half of each moto. Dewolfe, who has been training for those long National motos, passed Waters after the halfway flag and sped away with both moto wins. Waters finished up second in both motos, and Chris Withers rounded out the top three each time.
The first 16-29 A/B moto saw Jason Waters abscond with another holeshot. Dewolfe, Scott Morgan, I-20 Graphics' Andrew Ulmer, and Tyler Waters filled in the top five. Jason led the entire moto, as Dewolfe could not find a weak spot to take the lead. Ulmer passed Morgan for third to round out the podium.
Jason Waters went four for four on holeshots as the second moto got under way. Dewolfe pounced on an opportunity on the second lap to take the lead, while Jason dropped to fifth. Ulmer moved into second. At the finish, Dewolfe took the win, over Ulmer. Jason moved back up to third at the finish, over Morgan and Tyler Waters.
The best race of the day happened in the combined Schoolboy and 16-29 C/D contest. The first moto saw Austin Kimes pull out into the lead, followed by Josh Lee, Kyle Cowart, Spencer Waters and Weston Rountree. Lee passed for the lead on lap two. Kimes came right back on the next lap to reclaim the top spot. As the laps wound down, Kimes put a few bikelengths between himself and Lee. At the checkered flag, Kimes won over Lee, Cowart and Spencer Waters. Zack Blake moved up to complete the top five.
The second moto was all Lee's. Kimes kept the pressure on the entire moto but could not make the move. Spencer Waters and Cowart fought for third on the track, and Wesley Mullins found himself in fifth. In the end, Lee took the win, over Kimes. Cowart overtook Spencer for third. Mullins rounded out the top five.
Josh Swilpa tallied an impressive 1-1 score to win the 250 C class. Kimes kept Swilpa honest, taking runner-up in both motos. Cowart moved up in both motos to take the last podium spot each time.
Top Loretta Lynn rider Tommy Maxey (60, above) showed up at his home track to show the mini riders how it's done. Maxey took top honors in the 65 (10-12), Junior Mini and 85 (9-11) classes. The MSR/Maxima/Pro Circuit/Pirelli/Smith-sponsored rider won all his motos along the way.
