The Fritz family hosted another round of the AMA District 34 Championship Series on Sunday, August 23, at the Hurricane Hills Sports Center. Mother Nature did not cooperate; rain the day before and a torrential downpour on the afternoon of the event made track conditions "interesting." Brutal humidity didn't help facilitate the drying-out of the race course, either. Honda pilot J.P. Jankowsky topped the podium of the 250 B division with a perfect 1-1 showing.
Scott Jacoby and Jerome Justofin Jr. led the pack out of the second turn in the opening 250 B moto. Jacoby continued to hold the point after the pack cleared the downhill triple. Jankowsky didn't get the best start; he, Samantha Fritz, Patrick Desantis and Justofin rounded out the top five.
Jankowsky slowly reeled in Jacoby and made the pass for the lead seconds before the start of lap two. Jankowsky then set a blistering pace. Fritz gained some time on Jacoby and made the pass to take second near the 2 ½-lap mark. Jacoby was relegated to third, but then went down. Desantis inherited third and Justofin was now fourth. Jacoby remounted fifth.
Fritz did all she could to hold off Desantis but went down with less than a quarter of a lap to go. Jankowsky got the win with a 13-second advantage. Desantis, Justofin, Fritz and Jacoby completed the top five.
A thunderstorm moved through the area in the afternoon and dropped a large amount of rain in a very short period of time, and that left the race course a sloppy mess, with standing water and deep ruts.
J.P. Jankowsky (482, above) and Patrick Desantis (197) led the start of the final 250 B moto, ahead of Jacoby, Justofin and Fritz. The top five were all spread out by the start of lap two, undoubtedly due to the nasty conditions. Jankowsky had a six-second lead at the start of lap two but didn't take any chances and stepped it down a notch to take the win with a four-second lead. Desantis, Jacoby, Justofin and Fritz followed.
Desantis took second overall via a solid 2-2 performance, and Justofin (3-4) took third.
Tyler Loud (55, above) led the pack out of the first turn in the opening 250 C moto, followed by Ryan Troiano, Dirk Massaro, Justin Ferris and Jacob Hilstolsky. Loud quickly left the pack behind and started lap two with a seven-second lead. Mark Shupp, Hilstolsky, Troiano and Gary Smith rounded out the top five.
Shupp went down at the end of lap two, handing Hilstolsky second. Smith moved to third, Troiano was fourth and Ferris retook fifth. Loud increased his lead to 14 seconds at the start of lap three and took an easy win. Hilstolsky, Smith, Shupp and Louis Sloboda rounded out the top five.
Loud, Massaro, Smith, Shupp and Timothy Richardson led the start of the final 250 C moto. The sloppy conditions forced the top five to spread out and go into survival mode. Loud had a three-second lead after 2 ½ laps. Massaro went down on lap three, allowing Smith to take second. Shupp, Hilstolsky and Ferris took third through fifth. Loud took the checkers 16 seconds ahead of Smith. Shupp, Hilstolsky and Ferris closed out the top five.
