Round 5: Perris Raceway

Stewart Strives to Stop Jelderda's Streak

PERRIS, CABryce Stewart 240 at Perris Raceway 2009 0822

The 250 Intermediate class has been an extremely exciting class to watch all series long, from Michael Leib's winning the first couple of rounds to Johnny Jelderda's taking the lead in the points chase. Bryce Stewart (240, above) has been racing every other round, and he definitely brought his A game to this race.Jessie Huntley 853 at Perris Raceway 2009 0822

In the first moto, Jessie Huntley (853, above) grabbed the holeshot, with Stewart right behind him. Jelderda suffered a fifth-place start. Stewart quickly got around Huntley and began to check out. Jelderda wasn't having the easiest time getting around riders, but he eventually got into third. Once he passed Huntley for second, Stewart was gone. Since he broke his modified bike in practice, he was forced to ride his stock one. Even with a slower bike, he made his way up to Stewart. Unfortunately, the race was not long enough for him to pass his way into first place; second would have to do for now.

Looking for revenge, Jelderda was going to try his best to get a better start in the second stanza. Unfortunately for him, this did not happen. Stewart was out front and Jelderda was not too far behind. Halfway through the first lap, Stewart went down. Jelderda seized the opportunity and jumped into the lead. Stewart never looked like himself after his fall, and he finished the moto in eighth place. Meanwhile, Jelderda had checked out, and he won with ease. Ryan Theisan took second overall with 4-2 finishes. Huntley put in another good finish and got third for the night.

Although he may not have had the best night in the 250 Intermediate class, Stewart definitely made a statement in the Schoolboy class. In the first moto, he grabbed the holeshot. In the third turn, he slid out and went back to last place. Huntley was right behind him and took the lead. As Huntley began to check out, Stewart was weaving his way through the pack. Amazingly, he got into second and then passed Huntley for the lead. Everyone was stunned and amazed as Stewart took the checkered flag.

In the second moto, Huntley got the holeshot. His lead didn't last long, though, because Stewart flew right by him. You would think he would put it on cruise control, but Stewart was going faster than he had all night - legs off the pegs and all, but he did make it to the finish line in one piece. Huntley took second once again, and Matt Parker rounded out the top three with a 4-3 score.

Round five surely had some amazing races. The competition was stiff, and the riders have definitely stepped up their game. If you are interested in any happenings going on at Perris Raceway, please visit www.perrisraceway.com. See you next round!
