MILLINGTON, MI
After a night of bonfires and Supercross finals on the big screen, plus bench-racing galore, Baja MX got back to racing. It was a "fast guys rule" day, as the $3,000 Pro-Am purse had the A-class gates full of top-quality riders. Eric Montreuil (352) used his homefield advantage at Baja MX to outrun a 250 A class that was full of talent.
Twenty-six riders shot off the gate in the first 250 A moto, with Kawasaki jockey Kyle Hussey (675) from Moscow Hills, Missouri, out front. With the throttle twisted to the stop, Hussey was hanging off the rear fender, scrabbling for ever scrap of traction to keep the others at bay. Sunny Drake, Tony Gallo, Montreuil and Brett Crozier weren't going to go easy on Hussey, and they were all over the flyer from the Show Me State as the pack headed up "Kong."
Drake made his move first, displacing Hussey to the runner-up spot, while Crozier and Montreuil freight-trained around the track at high speed. Montreuil displaced Crozier and set out after Drake as lap three went down on the scorer's sheets. Montreuil took the top spot before the white flag and motored on for the win. Drake crossed the line in the runner-up spot, with Crozier not far off the pace in third. Hussey and Steven Mages rounded out the top five.
In moto two, Montreuil got a better start and then used his experience at the Baja MX facility to get out front and haul the mail, making the second moto all his and locking up the 250 A overall with a 1-1 sweep. Drake took a liking to the sandy track and had his Honda in the runner-up spot once again, turning in a couple of great rides to claim the second step of the podium. Hussey (4-3) turned outstanding starts and great rides into a podium finish. Steven Squire cross the line in fourth in moto two after a rotten first moto (in which he finished 24th). Jarred Schudel, who'd finished 12th in moto one, took the last spot in the top five.
In the 450 A class, it was Jerry Lorenz (881) who showed the field the white rear fender on the back of his Honda; with a field full of fast up-and-comers as well as seasoned veterans, that was no easy task. Lorenz doesn't know how to be intimidated: The young lad kept his head down and his throttle pinned, and he walked away with a couple of huge moto wins. National Arenacross Champion Jeff Gibson (2-3) was second overall, topping Sunny Drake (2-6), who placed third overall.
"I have been working with a new trainer," Lorenz reported. "It's been a lot of hard work, but it sure is paying off."
Three full days of racing await riders at Baja MX's next event, on Memorial Day Weekend - May 23, 24 and 25. Along with the nighttime activities, fast racing will ensure everyone a great time!
