Durelle's de Winner in Deweese!

DEWEESE, NEDavey Durelle 13 at Twisted Nipple 2009 1003

Another race weekend is in the history books. Riders from ages 4 through 67 and fans from seven states (and maybe one other planet) flocked to the Twisted Nipple Racing Complex near Deweese, Nebraska, for a race-perfect day, as the 10th annual Outlaw Mini Nationals, sponsored by Fred's Speed and Sport of Hastings, Nebraska, featured plenty of close racing all day. Davey Durelle (13, above, with Steve Copley, center, and Joe Dobesh, 45) and family went home with the most trophies with what was nearly a clean-sweep, thwarted only by Davey's wife Kamsey's get-off in the team race while she was racing out front.

But with nine classes being run, the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat was shared by many, and the crowd was entertained during half-time by Fred Cuba's wheeling Gary Scott's old Grand National XR750 around the track, to the appreciation of the fans and the nervous amusement of new owner Jim Babcock. Following that show, some serious rubber was laid down as the Rat-Rods took to the track in a very noisy and dusty display of old-time auto racing.

After the races and awards came the hog roast and barbecue dinner, and live music started right about dark and played well into the night. For the campers, breakfast was served in the morning, and there was an open track all day long just for those who still hadn't had enough.

Tucker Rocky deserves special thanks for all the donated prizes given away, and as usual the other sponsors came through to make this all possible. Also invaluable was the participation of announcer Ken Hatra, flagmen Ernie Wilson and Jerry Holmes, and chefs Claude and Diane Dericks and Sam and Lyle Nejezchleb, as well as Shawn Gordanier Jr. and Fred Cuba and the countless others who made this year's event one to remember. Their support is much appreciated. Hope to see you next October for the 11th annual Outlaw Minibike Nationals.
