CENTER CITY, MN
Tonya Heyers (6, above) took top honors in both the Open C and Women's classes during the inaugural 1Down4Up Winter Shootout held on North Center Lake, in conjunction with Chisago County's Celebration of Lakes. Heyers and her significant other, Charlie Horstman, served as promoters and sponsors of the event.
"1Down4Up is a youth organization that creates riding opportunities for those that are interested in riding motorcycles," explained Horstman. "We supply the bikes, the location and the equipment; all the kids have to bring with them is their desire to ride and a big smile. Our website - 1down4up.org - has all the info you need to get started."
Ellen Gunderson finished a solid second in the Women's class, behind race winner Heyers and ahead of a close battle for third that went down to the wire when Erin Pearson crashed near the start-finish line, allowing Kelly Johnson to finish third.
Heyers then sped to the checkers ahead of Kyle Johnson in the Open C class to notch her second win of the day.
Gunderson returned to compete in the Novice class and topped all the guys, winning the main event ahead of Rusty Rookey and Jake Ginther.
In the Open Pro division, Jake Bostrom (44, above) scored a come-from-behind victory over holeshot ace Mark Deal (33), who was relegated to third by Jake's brother Erick Bostrom (77) but held on to finish ahead of hometown favorite Jay Hoenk, despite racing with a broken left foot.
The Open A/Over 40 main event saw a repeat performance of the Jake and Erick Bostrom show. Deal finished in third again, this time ahead of Dan Niemi.
Jarred Shaughnessy (87, above) topped the 80 class, ahead of Jeremiah Lindberg (224).
All in all, it was a fun event for several 1Down4Up protégés who finished in first no matter what position they were in at the end of the race.
"I'd really like to thank all the volunteers that helped out and the racers that participated," said Heyers afterward. "We really appreciate all the support and hope to see everyone again next year."
