"Wild Wade" Schultz was the star of the show at the Rock River Riders' hillclimb, missing a perfect day by only thirty-six-thousandths of a second. He claimed two firsts and a second, as well as setting the fastest time of the day.
His first win came in the Open class on his big-bore Suzuki four-banger; he set the first-round fast time of 3.300 seconds. Nobody in the class could beat that time in the second round, but Kurt Krohmer set a new fast time of 3.140 seconds in the 600cc class. However, Schultz was up to that challenge and flew his roaring Suzuki over the top in a sizzling 3.094 seconds to seal the Open-class win as well as the Fast Time award.
Schultz's second win came in the Senior (Over 40) class, with a 3.157-second winning ride on his Honda CR500 in the second round, overtaking Jon Creek, who'd carded a 3.361-second time to get under Schultz's 3.365-second class-leading time in the first round.
Schultz's bid for a perfect day was ruined by Krohmer's ride in the 600cc class. Schultz was close, with a 3.186-second run on his Honda, but he had to settle for second place in that class, with Creek running third.
Jeff Jack and Matt Altfillisch were also double-class winners. Jack's first win came in the 200cc class, in which he posted a good 3.706-second ride on his KTM in the first round, which held up for the win. Chris Senn and Kyle Galloway claimed second and third, respectively. In Super Senior (Over 50) action, Jack was in second place, behind Mike Bacon and his 3.707-second run, at the intermission, but Jack twisted the throttle tight on his KX500 on his second run to sail over the top in an excellent 3.307 seconds for the win.
Altfillisch took his first victory in the 450cc class on his Honda thumper, coming off a first-round crash to post a class-winning 3.309-second time. Dan Groth also crashed on his first ride, but he popped over the top in 3.408 seconds on his KTM in the second round for second place. Chad Altfillisch was third.
Matt Altfillisch brought his Honda back in the 600cc Four-Stroke class and came from behind again for the win. His first-round 3.991 second-time had him in fifth place at the break, but he hammered the hill with a 3.217-second effort on his second ride for the win, with Kurt Krohmer second and Matt's brother Chad third.
The Altfillisch family had a very good day, as Chad also claimed a class victory, with a 3.582-second run for the win in the 250cc class. Krohmer took second again.
In Youth-class action, young Andrew Fortner was the only rider to top the hill, doing it in 5.883 seconds on his KX85 for the 85cc Junior Mini-class win. Other Youth winners were Emily Schultz in the 50cc class, Hank Smith in the 65cc class, and Dan Winberg in the 85cc Senior Mini class.
