RED WING, MN

Jay Sallstrom (1N) didn't know what was ahead of him as he made his trek from Mankato to Red Wing, Minnesota. Sporting his fresh, new Honda CBR Open-class hillclimber, he came equipped to take the fastest time of the day. However, it didn't happen for Sallstrom, as his fire-breathing beast broke on both attempts at the hill. He would finally make amends during his run in the King Of The Hill class.

More than 240 entries swarmed into town to compete at the historic Red Wing hill. The weather was pleasant and the competition was hot for the first round of 2010 ARMCA action.

The Micro-Mini class kicked-off the day, with 16 entries. Only four riders saw the Promised Land by topping the 330-foot summit. Davis Sunken took top honors with his amazing run of 15.735 seconds, over Kaden Funk's 19.082 time.

The largest class of the day, with 26 entries, was the Senior class. Quick reflexes and sheer consistency saw Brad Cain take it away from Todd Cipala, 6.948 to 6.987.

Spectators lined the fence at the starting line to watch as 12 Open-class riders took to the hill. Despite the raging ruts in the hill, times were tight throughout the class. Crowd favorite Sallstrom attacked the hill with his CBR, only to fall victim twice to a snapped chain two-thirds of the way up the hill. Horsepower: It's a good thing-until you find the weakest link. Kirk Mueller of Lavalle, Wisconsin, took the class win and set the fastest time of the day with a 6.475-second run aboard his Kawasaki triple.

The King Of The Hill class saw nine riders doing battle. Sallstrom came back with his Honda CR for a near-perfect run to win with a time of 6.704 seconds.
