MOON ROCKS, NV
For those who race in the MRANN Series, Halloween Weekend means the traditional race at the Moon Rocks Recreational Area. This year it was named the Frankenbender Hare Scrambles.
"I kept seeing dust but wasn't sure if it was lappers or what," said Irving Powers (4, above) after taking the checkered flag. "I knew Cody Wallis and Levi Hutchings were battling pretty hard in the beginning, so I just kept my distance."
After the initial charge, Wallis took the lead, with Hutchings right on his back bumper and Powers not far behind.
Heading for the finish, it appeared that Wallis was a shoo-in until mechanical problems stopped his run. The delighted Powers swept into the lead and stormed off to claim the victory.
"I need to thank Ron Honea, McCoy's Off Road, Brandon Thompson for my entry fees, Mark Diverse, as well as my family and friends that have helped me," Powers said after the dust had settled.
Reece Honea, despite being knocked over once, was second, ahead of Sean Berryman.
"I got past Sean in the pits," Honea said. "The course was good - fun as well as a little more technical in the second half, which I liked."
Further back, young Kyle Townsend, who finished ninth, finally beat his father, Cliff, who finished 12th.
The Amateur winner was Trevor Johnson, who finished 23rd, while 35th-placed Shawn Pettigrove was the Novice victor.
Several of the adults wore costumes, and one racer was garbed as a very strange-looking banana. Despite the day's hard racing, no riders required medical attention, and everyone seemed pleased with both the course and the day.
Saturday's Pee Wee winners were Aleea Howe, Dallas Serpa, Riley Harvey and Jonas Thissen. Not to be outdone by their elders, many riders wore costumes and participated in a contest. Later, there was also a trick-or-treat session in the camping area.
While the big bikes raced a 45-mile long loop, on Saturday the youngest riders rode for 30 minutes, while the Minibikes and V Women competed in 90-minute-long events. First on point for the Minibikes was Ty Tremaine - that is, until Max Pecoraro, a 15-year-old high school student, overcame a bad start and ripped into the lead. Once leading, Pecoraro put it on cruise control and stormed off to claim the win.
When the V Women's race began, 15-year-old Courtney Jackson got the holeshot - not an easy feat for a person who had spent some time in the hospital that week for an infection. Giving chase was veteran Chrystal Ponsock, who was riding hurt after going off course and almost dislocating one shoulder. In the final laps, Ponsock closed the gap, but she finally had to yield to the pain and dropped back, finishing second to Jackson.
A young woman of few words, Jackson simply said, "The race was fun and I liked the course."
