FREEMAN, IN

Coming into the final round of the Southern Indiana Series, Jake Fiddler was leading by only two points over Nathan Sullivan. Everyone was hoping for rain, since the Midwest had not seen any precipitation in a few weeks. The rain held off until early Sunday morning, making conditions wet and sloppy for the morning races with the smaller bikes.

Taylor Day, Luke Chilman (696, right) and Austin Lee put on a great race in the 85cc class, despite many crashes in the rain. The last few laps, the rain let up and the trail got a little better. Day took the win just 13 seconds ahead of Chilman, with Lee close behind in third.

As the big bikes lined up for the shotgun start, the rain let up. The slippery first turn was about 50 yards away - a tight right-hander that then led into the woods. The first row took off without any big crashes. John Maschino led Jake Fiddler and Nathan Sullivan, and the trio of riders stayed close for the first two laps of the 6-mile loop. Fiddler got by Maschino for the lead in the open field section aboard his Kawasaki 450 and then put about 30 seconds per lap on Maschino en route to the win. Sullivan filled out the podium.

Rik Smits dominated the Senior B class, despite a fall off coming out of the rocky ravine section. He finished an impress 11th overall, just missing the top 10 by seconds.

Yamaha riders Scott Kirchoff and Mark Jones battled each other in the Vet A class, with Kirchoff taking the win and finishing sixth overall.

Despite the rain, the trail was not as bad as expected, and there were only three DNFs. Even Ironman Don Hough, at 68 years old, was able to complete a lap.

The Guthrie family and the Hoosier Trail Riders provided the riders with a great track, and all their hard work in the tough conditions is much appreciated.
