Rounds three and four of the Southern Indiana Series played out back to back at Midway Motosports Park due to an earlier race being canceled because of a flooded parking area. The Hoosier Trail Riders had added a new endurocross section with some big tires and telephone poles, along with some groomed berms, which made it really nice for the fans, since most of the 6-mile loop was in the woods.
On Saturday, Jordan Ashburn (1, above) and Chris Bach battled back and forth, with Bach taking a slim lead for the first two laps. Then Ashburn got around Bach and led for the next two laps, but he was never able to check out, as the two Kawasaki jockeys pulled away from the third-place rider, local ace Jake Fiddler (24, below). Bach got back around Ashburn as they started their fifth of six laps, and Bach took the win just seconds ahead of Ashburn - making it an all-Kawasaki podium: Bach, Ashburn and Fiddler.
Round four on Sunday was run on the same course but in reverse, so the start was different. As the riders lined up for the start, it was explained that on the first lap they would not do the endurocross section. Asked if they understood, and would like to see the start by a club member, everyone agreed that they understood, and most riders would just have to watch the front row and then do the same. However, a few of the riders in the front row blew through some ribbon and started to enter the wrong trail. Those few riders soon got back on course, and the race resumed without any further mishaps.
It was Evan Chaille and Jordan Johns in the lead, making the tight first turn, with Zachary Nash and Tyler Tischler (11, above) close behind. Fiddler, starting on the inside, got squeezed out. Ashburn took the lead in the woods, with Fiddler not far behind, making up for his bad start.
By the 4-mile mark, Fiddler was able to get the lead from Ashburn. These two riders stayed close the next few laps, as Nathan Sullivan (14, above) and Nash tried to keep Fiddler and Ashburn in sight, but the two Kawasaki pilots were setting an unbelievable pace, pushing each other.
On lap three, Fiddler lost the front end, washing it out in a corner, allowing Ashburn to close in. They battled until the last lap, when they encountered lapped traffic; Ashburn was able to make the pass and hold on for the win. Sullivan finished out the podium in third.
The Senior A class was won by local rider Troy Lee (87, left), but it did not come easily, as "Digital Dave" Dunnuck and Robert Williams stayed together all day long, with Dunnuck leading most of the laps before going down on the last lap, allowing Lee to take the lead and hold on for the win just 30 seconds ahead of Dunnuck, who was just seven seconds ahead of third-placed Williams.
The weather was great for both days, and the HTR club did a great job of putting on two races in two days.
