AMA District 15 Hare Scrambles Series
Round 4: Stoney Lonesome Motorcycle Club

Cregg Continues His Control

COLUMBUS, IN

The second race of the 2009 Stoney Lonesome Motorcycle Club championship series was held in completely saturated southern Indiana terrain. While a quick glance at Sunday's weather conditions would indicate a beautiful day for racing, the week leading up to the event was anything but perfect, with heavy rains all day long, sometimes exceeding two inches in a day. Fortunately, the rain ended early afternoon on Saturday, and the sun came out long enough to dry the parking area.

Despite the conditions, 12 young Pee Wee racers headed into the woods at the wave of the green flag, and Jacob Stark landed the second victory in a row and of his career in the Pee Wee Injector class. Langdon Feltner made the course look easy with his consistent lap times, resulting in his first win in the Pee Wee Premix class at Stoney Lonesome MC.Dawson Dunnuck at Stoney Lonesome MC 2009 0517

The Mini race consisted of 54 riders lining up for this one-hour adventure. In the Supermini class, Larry Freund responded to his first-round third-place finish with an impressive win, over Matthew Hatchett, who won the first Stoney Lonesome race. This was another Witkowski family show, as Alex and Michael won the 85cc and 65cc races, as they did at the District 15 opener at Culver, Indiana. Jesse Parr continued to charge the entire race, resulting in an impressive second-place finish in the 85cc ranks. Eric Douglass surprised Michael Witkowski by leading the first lap of the 65cc contest in the muddy conditions. Douglass eventually faded just enough for the consistent and smooth-riding Michael to land a commanding victory. Vincent Smith charged early in the race and had built enough of a cushion in third place to hold off the late charge by Dawson Dunnuck (pictured), who finished fourth.

The big-bike course consisted of rocky creek bottoms and solidly packed high-ridge trails, and the unfortunate transitions between them. John Robbins charged ahead of the pack with the strong desire to break Jeff Cregg's win streak at Stoney Lonesome MC, where he appears to be invincible lately.

Robbins led the first three laps of the seven-lap race, only to relinquish the lead to Cregg on the fourth lap due to a bobble in lapped traffic. Jordan Johns was riding hard, just three minutes and eight seconds behind Robbins. Nathan Sullivan maintained his position on this lap, holding the number-four spot. Coming from the second row, Jeff's brother Andy Cregg moved through the crowd into the fifth place overall.

Jeff Cregg was still in the lead at the white flag, and riding well, doing his best to ensure the lead didn't change for the remainder of the event. Robbins maintained his position on this lap, holding the number-two spot, while Johns kept a cool head and maintained his third-place position.

At the checkered flag, Jeff Cregg had built a lead of just over five minutes on second-placed John Robbins. Jordan Johns, Nathan Sullivan and Andy Cregg rounded out the top five.
