Southern Indiana Series
Round 1: Midway Motorsports Park

Chilman Wins Round One

MITCHELL, IN

Round one of the Southern Indiana Series was hosted by the Hoosier Trail Riders at the old Midway MX track. The rains held off; the woods were only moist and the grass-track a little dusty.

Chris Jewel nabbed the holeshot on the old motocross track as the front row headed for the woods. Jewel's lead was short-lived, as both Logan Chilman (61) and Zachary Nash blasted by, with Daniel Sims closing in. Nathan Sullivan was last off the line, but he was passing riders in the tight woods. After one lap, it was Chilman leading Nash by 15 seconds, and Sullivan had moved up to third overall.

Chilman rode smoothly for six laps for his first overall win, ahead of Nash. Sims and Sullivan battled on the last few laps, and Sims turned in his fastest lap on the final go-around to get by Sullivan as he slowed with a silencer mishap that zapped some power from his Kawasaki.

The Light B class was the largest class in the field, with 18 riders. Jesse Ford led the way for the first two laps, with the Chaille brothers, John and Evan, pressuring him. John took the lead on the third lap and held on for the win. Evan got by Ford for second place on the fourth lap. Ford finished in third, behind the Chailles, completing five laps.

Bartley Addis got the holeshot in the Senior B class, with 13 other old guys right on his rear fender. Addis was eventually passed by Des Jarvis and Tim Tritton, who both got by him in the woods. Jarvis and Tritton then exchanged the lead several times for the next few laps. Jarvis took the win, 40 seconds ahead of Tritton. Addis finished in third, two minutes back. Russell Fulton charged up through the class to finish in fourth place with an exciting gas stop that almost took out his dog as he slid into the pit. Then, on his exit from the pit, the dog was biting at his swingarm and almost got wadded up in the rear wheel of his KTM as Russell roosted his pit crew.

Flat-track specialist Evan Wood led the C class from start to finish, ahead of Vincent Eads and Kevin Meadors. Wood tallied an overall finish of 28th.

Senior A rider Robert Williams won his class and finished ninth overall. Donnie Helterbrand won the Vet B class and also performed the best "trick" on the huge Culvert Pipe Crossing — a "fan-favorite" huge endo and face-plant!

Vincent Smith led the first seven laps of the 50cc Mix class before surrendering the lead to hard-charging Dawson Dunnick, who took the win 17 seconds ahead of Smith.

The participation and support of the HTR gang and the landowners at Midway Motorsports Park are much appreciated. The next race at Mitchell will be a two-day event on August 9 and 10.
