MITCHELL, INRound two of the Southern Indiana Series for District 15 Hare Scrambles took place at Midway MX in Mitchell, Indiana. Conditions were dusty once again. The start was different than that at round one, as it allowed riders more of a run into the woods — but this also meant that riders encountered a lot of dust. A good start was crucial; before the shotgun start, the riders were informed that the field leading to the woods was narrow, with a fence on one side and tall grass and ruts on the other side, so passing would be risky in the dusty start.
Lucas Oil/Johnny Sign's Jake Fiddler, on his KTM 250, got the holeshot into the tight left-handed first turn and led along the fence row and up into the woods, leaving a massive dust cloud behind him. The rest of the front row gave chase. The rest of the rows followed with no big crashes or mishaps with the fence.
Fiddler led the first lap of the nearly seven-mile loop, which consisted mainly of tight woods, grass-track, and a small motocross section. Cycle Shed's KTM jockey Johnny Robbins was one minute behind in second place. John Maschino was not far behind in third. Fiddler maintained his lead, leaving himself enough time to stop for a splash of gas and complete five laps for the overall win.
Curtis Ryan finished fifth overall and won the Vet A class, ahead of local GNCC regular Troy Lee. Mark Jones and Scott Kirchoff finished third and fourth in class. The three riders behind Ryan were within seconds of each other at the checkers after 90 minutes of racing.
The Heavy B class was won by Cory Robinson, with Robert Wilkerson in second almost two minutes back; both riders completed five laps. Third was Josh White with four laps, and Jake Wilkerson was close behind in fourth.
The Light B class had 19 riders. Jordan Johns took the win, with Daniels Sims just one minute back in second. Third and fourth went to Joshua Thacker and John Chaille.
In the Senior B class, Donnie Pifer got the holeshot on his Obermeyer's Yamaha and held on for the win. Keith Robinson finished second only 30 seconds behind. Andy Koontz put on a late-race charge to third, ahead of the smooth-riding Matthew Yeiter.
Jim Parsetich smoked the Vet B class by nearly six minutes, finishing ahead of Troy Pressnall. Brian Bennett, Matt Davidson and Todd Dixon rounded out the top five.
Out of the 135 riders entered, only a half-dozen tallied DNFs. Craig Koontz and Kevin Kruer had to call it a day due to some re-occurring injuries. A good time was had by the majority of the riders. Hopefully it won't be as dusty for the next race, which is the State race that counts for double District 15 points. Maybe the club can get a water truck by then!
