Round 2: Stoney Lonesome

Cregg Edges Maschino at Stoney Lonesome

COLUMBUS, IN

Round two of six at Stoney Lonesome had near-perfect conditions, with blue skies and a high of 80 degrees. The Stoney club laid out a 5-mile loop with just a few dusty sections and a long, challenging, rocky creek right before a hillclimb. With prime conditions — especially compared to round one — there was a very large turnout of riders, ready to take on the rocks and hills of southern Indiana.

Derek Scheffel absconded with the holeshot and Jeff Cregg was right behind him through sharp left-hander into the woods. Cregg got by for the lead. John Maschino was fifth into the woods and was passing riders, trying to keep Cregg in sight.

On the second lap, Maschino got by Cregg, but he only led for a short while, as he missed a turn and Cregg retook the lead — and held on to it for the next five laps. Maschino stayed with Cregg, hoping the leader would make a mistake, but Cregg was consistently fast on the rough terrain. Cregg finished just 20 seconds in front of Maschino for the win, with his brother Andy Cregg finishing third.

The Vet A class was won by Michael Smith, who finished sixth overall, nearly two minutes ahead of Pete Redel, who finished eighth overall. Third place in class went to David Durkee, who finished ninth overall. Jason Hall was in hot pursuit of this fast class, but on his last lap, he crashed hard into a tree while trying to stay ahead of Scott Kirchoff and Mark Jones. Hall was lying on the ground as Kirchoff and Jones came down the hill. Their sportsmanship really showed, as both of them stopped to check on the fallen rider. Hall was knocked out for a few seconds, but he was able to continue on. Kirchoff and Jones finished seventh and eighth in the Vet A class after possibly giving up a position or two by stopping to help. Hall finished in the top 10 in the class.

Robert Wilkerson won the Heavy B class, finishing 13th overall. Cory Robinson was second, three minutes back. Jake Wilkerson was third and Aaron Hughes fourth.

Zachary Nash won the Light B class; finally beating Daniel Sims, who had won the first three races of the year. Nash finished 14th overall, three minutes ahead of Sims. Finishing in third was John Chaille, just one minute behind Sims at the end of six laps.

The Senior A class was won Robert Williams, who finished an impressive 12th overall. Don Rainey and Kent Waggoner were second and third. Robert Kirchner was running well all day until he ran out of fuel; he was seen on the trail, trying to hitch a ride or mooch some gas.

The C class had 24 riders. Jeffrey Ramsey took the win, completing six laps. Mark Williams was second, ahead of Toby Oltman. Joseph Landfair was close behind in fourth.

The 80cc class was won again by Matthew Sims (470) ahead of Drew Quillen, Caleb Smith and Jacob Rickets.
