Round 6: Perris Raceway

Senior Vet Win for Johnson

PERRIS, CA

With thousands of feet of plumbing and wiring in place and the new track foundation slowly coming together, the Southern California's Flat Track Association's new facility, located just west of the current location, is getting closer to completion. Summer's in full swing, but the heat has been tolerable for the evening racing, filling the gates with racers from the Youth classes to the Super Seniors. Let's race!2010 0619 Perris Raceway SCFTA Craig Johnson 4Z vs Elliott Iverson 54

"Captain Craig" Johnson (4z, above) put a crimp in Jim Woods' domination from race five, when Woods won the Senior Vet Over 50 class and Johnson was third, behind runner-up Wes Powell. Johnson surged out of the gate and was in the point by lap two, while Wood rode smoothly, searching for the pass in the eight-lap main event. Johnson had built up a two-second buffer over Wood by the midway point. Meanwhile, Elliott Iverson (54) must have been munching on Wheaties in the pits, because he was having a great race, sitting in third. Johnson scored a decisive win. Wood came in second, but only after some late-race heat from Iverson, who finished third.

Lenny Rodriguez usually wraps up the Classic Vintage win with little fanfare, but this night proved to be different, as he poured it on to take the early lead, but Jeff Apple was on the case and feeling fine in second. At halfway, Apple throttled it into the lead, and now Rodriguez was feeling the steam from the oncoming Jim McMurren, who stole second late in the race. Apple took the win, with McMurren and Rodriguez completing the top three.

Wood made a late-race pass in the Vintage Two-Stroke Expert contest for the win, over Joe Steffen.

Josh Evans put on a short-track clinic in the Vet Over 35 class, pulling into first at the green light, with Paul Herman and Robert Bush sitting in his windbreak. Evans motored alone in first. Bush scooted underneath Herman in turn two for second. Evans seemingly had the race in hand, but a lapper on the white-flag lap slowed him, allowing Bush to close. However, Evans held him off for the win. Bush was second and Herman third.

Kayl Kolkman took a break from the National circuit to make some money at SCFTA, and that he did, winning the four-lap Dash For Cash held prior to the main events. The Troy Lee Designs/Southland Racing Products-backed Kolkman started off slow in the Pro main, sitting in third, behind David Bush and Evans. On lap three, Kolkman made one of many passes in turn two during the night's racing for the lead and eventual win. After sitting in third for most of the race, Evans finally got by David Bush near the end of the 20-lap main. At the checkers, it was Kolkman with the Pro win, Evans in second and David Bush third.
