Round 2: Perris Raceway

McGregor Powers to Vet Over 35 Win

PERRIS, CA

The Southern California Flat Track Association was forced to postpone the first two rounds in east San Diego; those two rounds will be worked into the schedule later in the year, and this event was officially round two. The spectator draw was good and the pits were full, as the parking area once again filled up. The new track is on the horizon - being constructed west of the current track, much to the delight of the short trackers. Once the new tack is completed, there will be an emphasis on holding speedway events as well.2010 0417 Perris Raceway Lloyd McGregor 38 vs Robert Bush 44S vs Paul Herman 77

Lloyd McGregor (38, above) was the slider of the day, powering early in practice with impressive speed and as one to watch in the Vet Over 35 class. Setting the pace early in the main event, McGregor stapled down the lead and held a slight gap over David Bush, Robert Bush (44S) and Paul Herman (77). While McGregor forged a two-second gap over the dogged David Bush on lap five, David once again was embroiled in a donnybrook with his brother Robert. While the white flag was doing the last-lap jig for the winning McGregor, the real show was for second place. After shadowing David on the last lap, Robert dived in low coming off the back stretch and slipped inside on turn three, gassing it out of turn four and through the checkers for the runner-up spot. Pinched by his brother at the last moment, David rolled across the line in third.

Nick Gil put the hustle to the bustle in the heat race, rushing out of the pits to make the heat after everyone was already lining up. Making the heat race, he promptly put the carburetor into double time, taking the lead by lap two in the Open Novice main. On lap three, the pecking positions were being established, as Gil held a slight buffer over Corey Bauman, Neal Hartman and Andy Kessinger. Gil stayed out of the fracas for positions, having built a two-second comfort zone on lap five of the eight-lap race, but Hartman, sensing urgency, locked in tight on second-placed Bauman and secured the second spot on lap six. Gils nailed the win by two ticks over second-placed Hartman, and Bauman was still fighting hard right behind in third.

Troy Lee Designs/Dodge Brothers Racing's Kayl Kolkman won the Pro main at what is now considered the first round. Not missing a beat, Kolkman applied the steam for the point in the Pro main at round two. Jeff Evans had best stay away from the kryptonite, because he was racing like Superman while keeping pace in Kolkman's slipstream. Ian Foulds and Robert Bateman fought for the third spot; Bates took that spot as Foulds appeared to be having issues and slipped back.

Near the halfway mark of the 20-lap Pro main, Kolkman created a slight cushion over the pesky Evans, in second. Bates, still in third, was starting to narrow the margin to Evans.

On lap 15, Kolkman, with a textbook ride, was hammering away with nearly a half-lap lead over Evans, with Bates slightly back and Wes Powell in fourth. Kolkman stayed spotless for the win, with Evans second. Bates was right behind Evans at the finish for third. Powell and Foulds completed the top five.
