SALINAS, CA

Racing was awesome at Quail Creek Ranch on this night. Two hundred and eighty-eight riders showed up to race despite the rain, which cleared up just about the same time the heat races started. Forty-two main events included Class C and a Knobby class. Money races were held for each of these, with a total payout of $1,400 to the riders.

Racing Motorsports Productions' Patty and Robert Silva and their entire team of workers did a fabulous job of organizing the races. Improvements this week included the addition of a start light. Practice went smoothly, followed by an evening of smooth racing on a superbly groomed cushion oval short track.

The smallest youngsters were first on the track. Drew Polk usually dominates his classes. On this day, he won the 50cc (5-6) class, but Darrell Ponton rode hard to take the lead and the win from Polk in the 50cc Intermediate event.

Christian Hickman, who has moved into car racing, was back on two wheels this week, taking the win in the 250 Expert C event.

Brandon Rothell crossed the finish line in front of the 250 Intermediate pack.

Former NASCAR driver Doug Davis finished second, behind Daven Marasca, in the Over 40 Novice class.

Anthony Giammanco (75, below) consistently got the holeshot in each event he contested. Fred Bennett and Giammanco battled through the corners of the Over 40 Expert contest. Kurt Chandler followed them to round out this podium.

After few crashes and a restart, Jimmy Woods (30, above) and Briar Bauman (10, above) put on a show in the 450 Expert event. Switching places every lap, they rode wheel to wheel from flag to flag. Meanwhile, Troy Milligan and John Vanderloan were battling for the fourth position, behind Ryan Foster.

Putting on another show for the crowd, Bauman and Woods battled again in the Open Money event, with Bauman taking home the money by inches ahead of Woods. Mikey Rush followed.

Stevie Bonsey took the win in the Knobby Open A Money race, followed by Curtis Peebles and Jimmy Lewis. Lewis won the Knobby 450 Expert class later in the program.

Rod Lake (98, left) led the 12-rider pack of Super Senior Experts to the finish line after getting the holeshot and leading all 10 laps. Clay Chambers and Craig Scroggins followed.

Jason Craven and Jon Nunes battled for the second spot in the Over 30 Vet Expert class while Josh Chisum maintained his front position from start to finish. Nunes was second and, Craven finished third.

Austin Williams, Chris Murry and Scott Bradford were the top three Knobby 250 Intermediate riders.
