Johnson Jams to Pro Win

PERRIS, CA

Former AMA National number 37, Jeff Johnson, came out to the Southern California Flat Track Association's eighth eight of its 10-round 2009 series. Sliding under the lights and a getting break from the summery temperatures that still prevail, Johnson sped to the lead in the Pro main at the wave of the green flag. Jeff Evans took over the second spot but came under fire from third-place rider Wes Powell. Riding well all evening, fourth-place rider Elliott Iverson once again had himself in the mix, and sitting behind him in fifth was Richard Pollock.

Powering into the fourth lap and enjoying his clean air, Johnson was firmly in front. Jim Woods blew around the chasers and into second. Evans and Powell were dashing and dicing in a tussle for third.

Nearing lap eight, Johnson was hotshoe-ing with the lead well in hand, followed by Woods and Powell. Evans, unrelenting, repassed Powell for third.

As the race neared the 20th and final lap, Powell and Evans appeared to come together in their breakneck battle for third, resulting in Powell's going down. Fontana Radiator Works racer Johnson roared in for the Pro main-event win, with Woods second, Evans a tenacious third, Pollock fourth, and Iverson fifth. After not having ridden for four months, Johnson was more than happy to take the win with no speedy youngsters on hand to toss a wrench into the works and rain on his party!

The Senior Over 50 class featured an eight-racer gate. Woods and Iverson were dueling for the lead, with Powell in third. Woods, powersliding with authority, left Iverson and Powell to battle for second. Powell maneuvered inside on Iverson to assume the position. Richard Pollock was running fourth. Woods held Powell at bay for the win. Powell took second. Iverson was unable to keep Pollock behind him, and Pollock placed third, while Iverson rolled in with a workmanlike fourth. Daniel Kane finished fifth.SCFTA Vet 35 Start at Perris Raceway 2009 0926

Marc Pape (99X), Paul Herman (77), Daniel Stinson (4), Richard Pollock (43), Jeff Evans (68) and Frank Aragaki (19) lined up for the Vet Over 35 contest. Evans surged into the early lead but went down. Frank Aragaki assumed the point, with Pollock close behind in second and Stinson two seconds back in third. Aragaki kept his focus on the track. Pollock, about six bikelengths back, was looking for a turbo boost.

On lap five, lapped riders became an obstruction for Aragaki, and Pollock was hoping to take advantage of the situation: He got on Aragaki's rear wheel, but it was to no avail. Aragaki raced in for the win, with Pollock second and Stinson third. Evans overtook one racer after being in dead last and finished fifth.

On Friday, October 23, the SCFTA will host a $4,000 Pro main in conjunction with Gene Romero's West Coast Flat Track Series. Three-time Grand National Twins Champion and current AMA number one Kenny Coolbeth is slated to make the Perris Raceway scene, as is Jared Mees. The racers will then pack up and head to the Los Angeles County Fairgrounds in Pomona and red-line it for the Pacific Coast Nationals. AMA's Pro Flat Track Grand National Series' 14th and final round, co-sanctioned with the WCFTS, is ready to release the thunder on the half mile racetrack.
