MARSHFIELD, WI
Round eight (a rainout makeup round) of the 2009 Badger Racing Association Thunderbike Flat Track Series took place on Marshfield Motor Speedway's fast half-mile blacktop circuit on August 22.
It was also WAXX Radio Night at the blacktop, and that's pretty much what Lee "Chunky" Johnson did to the competition on this night: He waxed 'em! He put his lighter-weight and freshly rebuilt Yamaha's power to good use and showed everyone the fast way home with a fast qualifying time and the feature win. Only a last-corner charge by Steve Kasten in their heat race kept Johnson from seeing the checkered flag first all night long.
In the main event, fast-starting Bobby Fedrowitz kept the regulars out of the point position for the first three laps. Johnson got by him with an outside move entering turn three to take over the lead. Usual front-runner Kasten got an unusual bad start and began picking his way through the pack, but by the time he got into second spot, Johnson was long gone. This was Johnson's first main-event victory here this season, and it was a well-deserved one.
Johnson set the fast qualifying time of the night (21.83) and carried the flag for Badger during the parade lap. Craig Lewis turned a 21.88, Fedrowitz ran 21.94, Kasten had a 21.98, Ted Strebe ran a 22.03 6, and Woody Eckes tallied a 22.22.
