HYR Endurance Series
Round 2: 12 Hours of Glen Helen at Glen Helen Raceway Park

A Habit You Don't Want to Break

SAN BERNARDINO, CA2010 0626 GHRP Colton Udall 3X

Winning can become habit-forming, and for Colton Udall (3X, above, and below, center) and his CRF450X compatriots Benny Breck (below, left), Ryan Orr (below, right) & Ryan Dudek and the entire Johnny Campbell Racing crew, it's one habit they don't want to break. The second round of Glen Helen's triple-race HYR Endurance Series was a grueling 12-hour race that saw the lead change at least a half-dozen times.2010 0626 GHRP Benny Breck Colton Udall Ryan Orr

"[It came down] to which bike was the best," said Udall, "and which team had the best pit crew."

Now that they are the defending winners in all three distance events (the Six, 12 and 24 Hours), the JCR Honda appears to have both.

"And this race was won in the pits, thanks to T.J., Jeff, Mike, Keith and Silver," added Udall. "Their riders? Hey, they are just as fast - if not faster - so this was a pit race."

Udall was referring to their prime opposition, the John Burr Cycles Kawasaki KX450 quartet of Gordon Ward, Brad Goolsby, Brandon Brady & Ryan Reina, who led early and, despite all the lead changes, led more laps, only to falter at the end.

It was back-and-forth affair from the 5 p.m. start of the all-nighter, a first for this ninth annual race, with veteran MX racer Ward leading until a spill put Udall in the lead, and thus began the tug-of-war, which would last throughout the night. Only a 12th-hour surge opened up a six-minute margin of victory at the checkered flag.

The only blemish in Udall's performance was when he was halted in the pits for track cutting.

"I am not a cheater," said Udall of his quick lap about 30 seconds out of the norm. "I had just gotten past Ward, and it was clear of traffic along the ridges, and I just whaled."

He was quick to add that that lap was still slower than laps earlier in the evening. As it turned out, Ward, too, was halted for a similar infraction later in the stretch drive, so the points were balanced out.

Third overall, both in class and overall, was the other 450F Kawasaki Open Expert entry of Tyler Renshaw, Justin Jones & Richie Owens, who were three laps off the pace. One lap further back was the top 250 Expert factory-assisted KTM team of Justin Imhof, Morgan Crawford, Justin Seeds & Jeffrey Do, whose closest rival on the track was the Business class-winning HYR quartet of Jason Riley, Kris Keefer, Drew Collins & Colton Manwill, on a 450F Honda.2010 0626 GHRP Stewart Family 72

The David-vs.-Goliath award goes to the Family-class winners, the Stewart family (72, above): Trevor Stewart (age 12), Tristan Stewart (14), Logan Fogwell (16) and Travis Console (15), who rode their JBC/Enzo/Willie Surratt Racing Honda minicycle to a one-lap victory over the older and bigger runner-up Yamaha-mounted team of Mark Kalpakoff, Max Jack, Gabe Nazroff & Gabe Siapi.

Ironman honors for the second event in a row went to veteran motocrosser Cody Knauss. He led from the start, with fellow 250F Honda pilot Lee Fulmer in pursuit, and they were on the same lap for the duration. A brief break to relax with four laps to go saw a 16-minute advantage nearly evaporate to 90 seconds, but Knauss remounted and won by nine minutes at the checkers, a few minutes before sunrise.

Even a major rupture in the huge water tank that feeds the nearby Pavilion, which produced a flash flood through Bud's Creek and spilled onto the Glen Helen pit-entry road, couldn't stop the racing. It did change the course a bit, though, until the water was finally shut off. The incident caused track manager Lori Bryant to look up into the sky.

"Yup, no wonder," she said. "There's a full moon."

The gremlins must have gotten wet.
