Round 16: Lodi Cycle Bowl

Lodi Riders Try Wilma One More Time

LODI, CA

More good weather and more great racing greeted 142 entries as the Lodi Cycle Bowl's modified TT course again provided the setting for this night's racing. Not surprisingly, the 100cc classes were larger than normal, as almost everyone who could rustle up a 100/125 minicycle did so, packing in as much seat time as possible in preparation for next week's 100cc National race.2010 0807 Lodi Stewart Barber Jr 1 vs Briar Bauman 10

Eight riders came to the line for the Open A main. Six of them have won this class at one time or another in the last year, so it would all come down to who had the best setup for this demanding course and who wanted the win the most. At the start, it was the "Holeshot King" himself, Stewart Barber Jr. (1, above), who led the pack into the first turn and throughout the first 10 laps of this 12-lap race. Briar Bauman (10), the 2010 Horizon Award winner, looked smooth and on his game as he dogged Barber throughout those first 10 laps. As Barber and Bauman came through the tree turn on lap 10, they came upon the first lapper, who balked Barber's line and gave Bauman a perfect setup into the first right-hander. From that point on, Bauman was untouchable.Lodi Ad 100 4STRK Mini Natl

One of the longest-running competitors in the 150 Modified class is Bill Holt Jr. After first trying his hand in the Vintage classes, "Junior" has found his niche in this class, on his beautifully prepared CRF150F. Junior says that he keeps his bike in the living room and polishes it while watching TV, and just a look at the bike shows that he's telling the truth. In the 150 Modified main, Junior dominated the first five laps, but on the white-flag lap, in the technical tree turn, he tried a little too hard and slipped wide; though he saved the ride, he let Zach Nichols and Mitchell Green by for first and second. Junior vowed that he would not let that happen again!2010 0807 Lodi B Joe Knight 1

The Over 40 A main was exciting as well. Having done some serious soil sampling on the hill during practice, KTM-mounted Jon Eichelbaugh was loaded for bear, ready to prove that nothing had been lost during his meeting with the hay bales. Eichelbaugh came off the start line last but made it by Jeff Spohr and then settled in to work on Mike Krusemann. Joe Knight (1, above) paid no attention to any of these goings-on, instead keeping his head down and dominating the race from start to finish and taking the first of his two class wins on the night.2010 0807 Lodi Bronson Bauman 30 vs Dominic Colindres 66

Lodi has been running a series of "Am" classes for the 250, 450 and Vintage riders, in an effort to provide additional classes in which these riders can compete. The 250 Am was a torrid affair, as Bronson Bauman (30, above) nailed the holeshot and led the first three laps. Dominic Colindres (66) was not to be denied, though, and he matched Bronson wheel for wheel until he found his way through in the 180-degree right-hander. Bronson spent the next three laps trying to get back past, but Colindres had the setup on this night and took the checkers.

Next week will feature the 19th 100cc Minicycle National! Ride or watch, but make sure you're there for this 25-lap event. All regular Sportsman classes will be run as well, so if you've got a dirt tracker, you've got a place to race at the Lodi Cycle Bowl.Lodi Ad Stockton Mile
