District 36 Dirt Track Series
Round 14: Toby Jorgenson Memorial at Lodi Cycle Bowl

Long Cuts In on Scally at Lodi

LODI, CA

This night's short-track race was the 12th running of the Toby Jorgenson Memorial. Named after a skilled and respected young local rider who died pursuing his dream of a professional career, the Toby Memorial is always one of the best-attended races of the year. The Lodi Motorcycle Club honors Toby with an injured-rider fund and a high school scholarship, both in his name. More than $2,500 will go into the Toby Fund from this night's racing.2010 0710 Lodi Bob Scally 71Z

District 36 has a strong and active Vintage scene, with a variety of Vintage classes and groupings. Some of the best racing occurs when smaller classes are joined together for a "combined" race. This night's combined Vintage B and Vintage Over 50 A event was one of those races. Bob Scally (71Z, above), a 67-year-old Expert racing legend who has been riding his Lancaster-framed Triumph 750 since it was brand-new, has done as many laps around this quarter-mile oval as anyone, and he knows the way to get to the checkers first. Another crusty senior rider, 62-year-old Ron Long, a Junior, has lots of racing experience but has only recently come to dirt track from his Expert status in speedway. Long was hopeful that the lighter weight and greater maneuverability of his J&E-framed TT500 would give him a chance against Scally's experience and power.Lodi Cycle Bowl Ad 2010 0715

The heat race didn't go well for Long, as he crashed in turn two, but in the main event, and after a quick lesson in dirt-track tire cutting, Long chased Scally for four laps before finally squaring off the exit of turn two and drag-racing Scally down the back straight to make the inside pass stick. Scally was heard warning any other racers against teaching Long any more setup tricks.2010 0710 Lodi Joe Pineda 46

The Vet Over 30 A event was similarly exciting, as D-36 number-one Vet rider Joe Knight snagged the holeshot and led the first four laps. Joe Pineda (46, above), a longtime D-36 Expert, tried first the inside and then the outside, but Knight wasn't giving up easily. Knight finally slipped just a little coming out of turn two, and that's all Pineda needed to get a solid drive down the back straight. Coming into turn three, Knight held the throttle on as long as he dared, but Pineda had the pole line and he never looked back.2010 0710 Lodi Brian Martinez 5 vs Tony Meiring 56 vs Darren Johnson 90 vs Stewart Barber 1

The Open A race was its usual slugfest. D-36 number-one Open A rider Stewart Barber Jr. (1, above) earned a front-row start but then jumped the line (along with two other riders) and was relegated to the third row. Famous for his blazing starts, Barber made the final restart work, as he finished the first lap in fourth place, got past Rotax-mounted Tony "The Tiger" Meiring (56), and was then perfectly positioned to drop inside Darren Johnson (90) and Brian Martinez (5) when they tangled in turn two. Barber tucked in and grabbed the lead and never looked back, stretching his lead to almost the entire front straight by the checkers.

Next week's racing will be on the "short" TT track, as the Bowl starts preparing for the 19th annual 100cc Minicycle National on August 14. Only riders actually entering and competing in this event are eligible for a raffle for a brand-new CRF100 Honda. Past winners of this event include Tony Souza Jr., Mikey Martin and Stevie Bonsey. The main event will be 25 laps of Mini Madness, and the normal full D-36 program of races is also planned. If you're looking for some hot fun on a warm Valley evening, the Cycle Bowl is where you want to be!
