District 36 Dirt Track Series
Round 13: Lodi Cycle Bowl

Wood Wows 'em!

LODI, CA

The Lodi Motorcycle Club's crack crew of track builders, led by the infamous Bubba Taylor, really rolled out the goods for this night's racing. Race action was usually two-wide in the corners and often four-abreast on this quarter-mile clay groove short track. The weather was perfect for both the riders and the spectators, with a full program of 184 riders and racing starting at 5 .pm. and ending at 10:05. It was just one of those nights!2010 0626 Lodi Jimmy Wood 66 vs Kyle Jones 4

Jimmy Wood (66V, above) gave the Open A riders some National-class competition, and the locals stepped up in fine fashion to make Mr. Wood earn his pay. Both John Vanderlaan and Ryan Foster were breathing heavily on Wood at the start, but it was Kyle Jones (4) who really made Wood work for his eventual win. Jones, the 2009 District 36 number-four Black Plate holder and an extraordinarily smooth and stylish rider, showed Wood his wheel repeatedly during the first half of this 15-lap main event, but Wood is used to such pressure and he never faltered. Jones finally faded a bit and Wood ended the race with a four-bikelength lead, taking home the bacon, which nicely augmented his wins in the Lodi Money and Dash For Cash events.

The racing was also hot in the Vet Over 30 A class. This class is usually filed with 450s, big Rotaxes and the like, but on this night Jason Craven (77, below) rode his TT500 Yamaha, the only non-Vintage bike in the class, to an impressive third place. Three riders steadily gapped the field, with first Craven and then Robert Bacosa (58) trying to make a pass on leader Joe Knight (1). The race was won by Knight, with second being taken by Bacosa.2010 0626 Lodi Jason Craven 77 vs Robert Bacosa 58 vs Joe Knight 1

The 500 Pushrod class is popular with both riders and spectators. The class allows bikes with pushrod-operated valves of up to 525cc and from years up to 1978. B50 BSAs really show their torque, but Triumph twins do quite well, and the sole Moto Morini in the class makes some fine noises as it circulates the course. "Slim Jim" Hoogerhyde won his heat and taunted the Morini-mounted Al Webber throughout the entire heat. That proved to be a bad omen in the main, as the very clean B50 of Joe Simas carried the restarted race from pole to pole, while Slim Jim earned the additional title of "Farmer Jim" when he dug up the track in turn one. Webber was seen returning Hoogerhyde's taunts at evening's end.

Lodi is taking time off for the Fourth of July holiday, but racing returns on July 10 with the Toby Jorgenson Memorial short-track event.
