Awards Banquet: Farmington Fire Hall

Yoder Crowned 2009 DDTA Track Champion

FARMINGTON, DE2010 0227 DDTA ab Ken Yoder 57A

Delaware Dirt Track Association racers were rewarded for their 2009-season efforts on Saturday, February 27, at the Farmington (Delaware) Fire Hall. A highlight of the evening was when Ken Yoder (57A, above and below left, with his trophy) was crowned as 2009 track champion. In addition to that honor, Yoder, a Suzuki pilot from East Earl, Pennsylvania, earned two championships: He topped the 450 A class, in which he collected a six-point advantage over second-placed Tom Majeski, and the Sportsman A class, in which he outscored Mike Poe by 13 points, 30-17.2010 0227 DDTA ab Ken Yoder Track Champ

"Winning combined championships was great, but this is the icing on the cake," beamed Yoder.

Perry Phillips was third in the 450 A points count, followed by veterans Tom McGrane and Travis Diem. In Sportsman A competition, Roy Miller, McGrane and Majeski made up the rest of the field.

"What makes these championships special is that the whole series was raced on the same track and riders just need to come out on top," Yoder said.

Goodville, Pennsylvania's Roy Miller ruled the 250 Sportsman standings with a four-point edge over Kevin Bills.

"It takes consistency and a lot of help from family," Miller said. "I'd like to thank my wife and kids. I'm just having fun."

Greg Lerch led the Open B points chase, earning 18 points to edge out his brother Steve Lerch, with 17.

Also picking up two championship trophies were Malasa, New Jersey's Georgie Price (below, right), son of legendary flat tracker Georgie Price. In the 65cc class, young Georgie narrowly beat his 6-year-old brother Jonathan by a single point. In the 85cc class, Price outdistanced Chase Smith by a single point. Meanwhile, Jonathan Price (below, left) topped the 50cc division, beating Ford Weber, 4 to 3. Trailing Weber were Logan McGrane, Jacob Humphrey and Chase Smith.2010 0227 DDTA ab Price clan

"It's an unbelievable feeling; I'm as proud as can be," Georgie Price (above, center) the elder said. "Both kids are doing good. They're riding real smooth and safe. I don't really push them. They just take their time. My grandfather told me, 'You be smooth first and speed will come as you go along.'"

"It feels pretty good winning two championships," said 11-year-old Georgie Price.

The Vet A standings saw Scott Mullen and Ray Jenkins tied for the lead. Mullen won the tie breaker with more overall finishes, and Jenkins was relegated to second. In the battle for third, Majeski and Ken Halderman were tied at four apiece, with Majeski taking third and Halderman fourth. Don Mullen Sr. was fifth.

"It's really special," said Coatesville, Pennsylvania's Mullen, "because it's my first year I've been into flat-track racing for the competition, so that makes it even better to win a first-place trophy."

Racing was scheduled to resume with a practice day on March 7, followed by the season's first race on March 28. However, track owner Mark Miller told the audience that recent winter storms have flooded the track, which will take some time to dry.
