RAMSEUR, NC
With only one more points-paying race left after this night's event, the chase for the points in the Southeast Dirt Track Championship Series is getting more interesting as each checkered flag waves. A solid group of dirt trackers were on hand to go at it on this immaculately prepared southern short-track venue. It took multiple heats in a number of classes to set the order for the main events, and then it was time for the fireworks, as the main events were set to go green.
In the 50cc class, Wesley Brown and points leader Dillon Vandekerkhove went at it hard, with Brown coming out on top with the win.
Joshua Smith padded his points lead with a win in 65cc competition. Al Thomas Hughes placed second and Noah Kirby was third.
The 85cc class saw Jonathan Smith making to the checkers first for the win. Hughes once again had to settle for the runner-up position.
With two runner-up finishes already on the night, Hughes would not be denied in the 70-125 class: He set sail from the start and took the win. Points leader Buster McCoy was second, and Kirby was third.
"Flyin' Ryan" Rutland grabbed the lead at the start of the 0-200 contest and saw nothing but clean air in his path en route to taking the checkered flag. Staton Lomas took the second podium position. Kaiti McLane finished it out in third.
The Over 50 class put on its usual great show. Points leader Ken Steele' clutch hand went to sleep on the line and he choked it down at the start. Scott Morgan took care of business with the win. Wayne McJunkin was second and Spud Taylor was third.
In Vintage Open racing, Tennessee's Tommy Sisson continued to show his dominance, taking the win. Blake Lomas was second and McJunkin was third.
All eyes were on the start line in the Open Amateur class as Cole Davis (21, above), son of the late Will Davis, prepared to make his dirt-track racing debut amid the other young guns who were all ready for the green light to appear. As they entered turn one for the first time, Davis went down. Scott Morgan (33) had nowhere to go except over Davis' downed Rotax. Davis was able to return for the restart; Morgan was not. At the finish, it was once again Rutland with the win, with Davis in second and Staton Lomas in third.
In Pro Am competition, Robert Lewis took the win. Garth Brow was second and Jerry Steele third.
Brow returned the favor in the Open Pro class by taking the win and leaving Lewis with second. Steele was again third.
